Hi,
I'm hoping someone may be able to find a birth for my grandmother Jessie Frances Etherington as I have spent many years trying to find it!
Her parents were Frederick Henry Etherington and Esther Jane Garrett but they did not marry until 1893 - so perhaps she isn't really an Etherington after all!
I believe Esther is the daughter of Thomas Garrett and Elizabeth Workman born in 1860 in Tetbury.
I have tried searching for Jessie with a surname of Garrett but have had no luck so if anyone can break down my brick wall for me that would be amazing!
Many thanks

Hello Cleo and welcome :)
Do you have Esther in 1891?
Heywood
Added- I think I have her now :)
-
Hi, Thank you for your prompt reply.
No I haven't been able to find her or her mother in 1891.
I believe her father Thomas died in 1887 and her mother Elizabeth in 1904.
I've just seen your 'added' - does that mean you've found her in 1891?
-
The age is out but wondering if this is her
1891 Piece 65 folio 62
Esther Jarrett 26 yrs b Tetbury, Gloucestershire
She is a Cook in the household of Francis and Mary Wilkinson, Chelsea. He is the Vicar of St John’s Chelsea.

Hi,
It's possibly that is her and she went home to have Jessie but I still can't find a birth for Jessie!
Many thanks for your help - I'll keep trying!
-
What is the source of her exact dob?
-
Did she marry Albert Austin (in Edmonton, 1912) and live (& die) in Slough/Windsor?
If so, an alternative birthdate seems to be 15 October 1889.
-
1911 shows her born abt 1889

Thank you all for your replies.
Yes she did marry Albert Austin in Edmonton, I have obviously picked up an incorrect dob but I still can't find her birth registration which is frustrating!
Where are you picking up the dob of 15 Oct 1889 from please?
-
Birthdate is suggested by the free index to the 1939 Register - the full entry is available on Findmypast.
-
Many thanks for the confirmation at least I now have a correct dob for her - still no trace of her birth being registered at yet but I'll keep looking!
Thank you all for your help - the benefits of having subscriptions to more than one online site are apparent here!

There are two entries on the London, England, Workhouse Admission and Discharge Records on Ancestry which are interesting.
One is for the admission:
Hester Garrett
Admission Age: 26
Says "pregnant"
Admission Date: 12 Oct 1889
Admission Place: Kensington and Chelsea, Chelsea, London, England
Other is for the discharge:
Just says "at own request".
Esther Garrett
Discharge Date: 14 Oct 1889
Discharge Place: Kensington and Chelsea, Chelsea, London, England
There's this birth which is a maybe:
GRO Births:
GARRETT, JESSIE - no mmn

Hard to tell!

That looks hugely promising, Maureen :)
-
Hi Maureen,
Thank you so much for your help - and everyone else who have replied.
It does look very promising so I will order a copy of the birth certificate and hope it fills in some gaps for me.
If this is my Jessie then her mother Esther may not be the daughter of Thomas Garrett and Elizabeth Workman as I had thought as if she was 26 when she was in the workhouse that would give a dob of around 1863 - then it will be back to the drawing board. Although I can only find a Hester Garrett born in 1860 in Tetbury ???
-
I wouldn’t get too hung up on age precision - variation within a few years is so common in 19th century records as to be normal.

I agree and you can always check her father’s name through her marriage certificate.
-
Hi,
I have a copy of her marriage certificate which shows her as Jessie Frances Etherington and her father as Frederick Etherington.
I have ordered a copy of what may be her birth certificate so it will be interesting to see if there is a father named :-)
-
Sorry, I was referring to Esther and your new thoughts about her parents.
-
Ah, sorry I thought you were talking about Jessie!
I'll see what information is on her birth certificate and then have another look at Esther/Hester's parents.
Thank you - all input is very gratefully received.
-
I now have a copy of Jessie's birth registration which shows a dob of 15 October 1889 which matches that shown on the 1939 Register so all seems right.
The birth was registered in Kensington as suggested and it shows her being born at Kensington Infirmary.
She is named as Jessie daughter of Esther Garrett. domestic Servant of 23 Park Street with no father's name given ;).
So - thanks to all your suggestions I now have confirmation of my grandmother's birth. Now to check out the marriage of Fred Etherington to Esther Garrett to verify her father's name and occupation.
Having looked on the GRO site I was able to order a PDF of Jessie's birth certificate but when trying the same option for the marriage certificate it does not offer the PDF version as an option which is strange.
Does anyone know if there is likely to be an image or transcription of the marriage certificate online anywhere? It took place in Windsor Sept Qtr 1893 their names being shown as Fred Etherington and Esther Jane Garrett.
Many thanks everyone!
-
Soooo .... I have Esther on the 1891 Census but where is Jessie I wonder?
Any ideas as I haven't managed to find her? She would have been about 17 months old at that time.
-
The £6 GRO pdf scheme only covers birth entries from 1837 - 1917 and death entries from 1837 - 1957
The marriage you are looking for is not online. The original parish registers for the district will have been deposited at Berkshire Record Office
http://www.berkshirerecordoffice.org.uk/family-history/parish-register-guide/
The page range for Windsor for that quarter is 823-873, the marriage you are looking for is 825, with no marriages online it is hard to suggest which parish church
There's a list of possible places here
https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/reg/districts/windsor.html
you get a smaller list if you take out the subdistricts that were created qfter 1893.
If you can't visit the record office in person to check, or can't find an announcement in a newspaper, you may have to pay £9.25 for the cert
-
Many thanks for that information - I'll have to bite the bullet and pay £9.25 for the marriage certificate then!
