I am trying to find the parents of Margaret Lynch, wife of Patrick Gleeson. She was reported to have been born in Ireland (according to several family trees-Clare or Cavan or Tippererary-c1846) and died in Napier in 19 Sep 1929. She married Patrick Gleeson in 1874. I think she might be the daughter of Daniel Lynch and Ann Maher (various spellings) although many of the trees say their daughter Margaret was born c1843. Their son Michael Lynch ran the Clanricarde Hotel, originally owned by Patrick Dignan. I believe this branch of the Lynch family is related to the Dignan family. Thanks for your help!

Have you looked at the passage records to NZ?
This may narrow down your search area for her birth and parentage.
Could this be her?

The information for the marriage of Margaret and Patrick is:
1874/8659 Margaret Lynch Patrick Gleeson

added: Michael's possible death http://www.rootschat.com/links/01lzj/ although note there is another Michael in Auckland after this date at another hotel http://www.rootschat.com/links/01lzk/
A search at Archway for "Gleeson Lynch" throws up some interesting tidbits https://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/SimpleSearchResults.do
As does a possible link between Lynch and Dignan with "Lynch Dignan" search terms.

Thanks very much for all of the links! It might be a coincidence but there are some of the right names in the references that you sent (e.g. Denis Lynch-the father and a potential brother). The Michael who died in 1876 was a client of Dignan and Armstrong. The hotel he ran again, was previously owned by Patrick Dignan. Peter Dignan, son of Patrick shows up at the wedding of Margaret and Patrick Gleeson's daughter Kate. Again, thanks for the other pieces that round out a picture of the family. I suppose I need to buy Margaret's death certificate in the hopes that it lists her parents. I have not found any trees online that mention her parents. I do see from looking at her probate that you kindly sent, they certainly had some money! Thanks again!

One more thing. I tried to find a marriage announcement in Paperspast. I figured out they married on April 6th, 1874. No luck!

Thanks Lu!

I think the reference in one of the newspaper articles to Tipperary was the name of their house in Auckland.
The suggested ship's passage for Margaret notes Limerick, if that is indeed hers.

Thanks! He sounded like a real character straight out of the gold fields, gun and all!

"I suppose I need to buy Margaret's death certificate in the hopes that it lists her parents."
Probably the best way to go. However make sure you request a printout, this is cheaper and may contain more information than a certificate. Can also be e-mailed to you.........

Freeman Journal 6 Feb 1908 p22

This article in a NSW paper, and written during his visit to Sydney, gives good details about the life of Patrick GLEESON in Australia and New Zealand.

Maybe not helpful but these snippets (which perhaps you have already seen?) appear to relate to Margaret's brother.......

Thanks for the links minniehaha and wivenho. The profile and photo of Patrick Gleeson was very interesting! I think the link to Margaret's brother helps potentially confirm her link toe Denis Lynch (the father).

Further to reply #15......
This is the correct family as you will see from the second report below where mention is made of the children's uncle, Mr. Patrick Gleeson.........
https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/THA18880324.2.9?end_date=31-12-1889&phrase=2&query=denis+lynch&start_date=01-01-1886

And from the latter report there is mention of another brother, Michael Lynch........

Thank you so much. That certainly links her. What a terribly sad story for the kids of Denis, her brother and Catherine, her sister in law. Everyone knew their business too! Again, many thanks for linking the family for me!

Once again, more interesting and helpful links! There are many Lynch family members and maybe relations in Symond Street Cemetery (I know most of them were moved). I am still working on linking these two families so will build up my tree and see if that helps. Thanks again!

Yes I thought there might be something on that link for you to work on...... ;D
