Title: Goddard dead end
Post by: MacGrigor on Saturday 19 May 18 22:24 BST (UK)
Hello,

John Goddard was baptised in Enfield in 1780, but both the transcript and original record do not give any parents. Can anyone find any wills or anything that may provide clues to John's parentage? He married Martha Corby in Edmonton in 1811.

Thanks,

Adam

If his parentage is unknown - how can anybody know whose will to look for?

Don't wills often name living children? In my experience they have.

FamilySearch says baptized 8 March 1780.
But I can't see it on ancestry?

Yes they probably do but as you don't know his fathers name - how would you know which Goddard will to search for or look at?

Presumably his father was still alive in 1780 so could have died anytime from 1780 onwards.

On find my past it looks as though johngoddard baptise 8 March 1780 Enfield was also buried that day

Then there is another John Goddard burial, Enfield, 6 jan 1799

Is he on the 1851 census confirming his birth year and birthplace as 1780 Enfield?

Sadly the link leads to a pay wall for those who aren't with FindMyPast!
He's not baptized at St Andrew according to the original image on ancestry.

Speaking of St Andrew, there's a burial there, 20 October 1850
John Goddard
age 70
abode Ponders End

Is that him?

If it is him - he died before the 1851 census so how has it been established that the baptism in Enfield is the right one?

The FindMyPast baptism is again just an index, Enfield, doesn’t give Church or parents but is clearly a separate entry from the burial

Hi
It's probably the same one as is on FamilySearch
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NJ58-1V5

It's possible they made some indexing error, I don't know.

If it is him - he died before the 1851 census so how has it been established that the baptism in Enfield is the right one?

We need Adam to come back with the info!

Yes, the March baptism is correct. The actual record I have viewed and it names no parents. The 1850 burial is him and this age at death gives 1780 as his year of birth. He appears only on the 1841 Census in Enfield, and was born in the county of Middlesex according to this. His year of birth is 1782 - 1786 on this record.

When you looked at the actual record, were parents named on other entries?

I don't recall  :'( the film is viewable on FamilySearch but I can't remember exactly where. It was still at St. Andrew if memory serves.

But baptisms for March are here

and burials for March

He's in one but not the other!

Is that the actual parish register? It's too late at night to find out.
Here is the burial record from St Andrew Enfield

He's always been a puzzling one. He was a nonconformist at some point. He married at an Anglican church, but then baptised my ancestor at the Independent Church in Ponders End, before baptising him into the C of E at St. Andrew about a month later  ???

Baptism, July 1781, Edmonton
John s. of William + Mary Godard

Not sure of the exact date (ancestry say 8th)
May be a possibility, as it's in the right area. Albeit John wasn't alive in 1851 to tell us!

In light of the 1780 burial record, that is more likely. Plus, John did marry in Edmonton in 1811.

Another hopeful sign? First son was William, bap 23 August 1812 in Enfield.
I have a feeling that we have met William somewhere else, in Essex maybe!

Various baptisms to John and Martha in Enfield and Edmonton, abode is Ponders End. No Mary (Ann) until 1822 though.

Marriage at All Saints Edmonton, 7 December 1779
William Goddard + Mary Tredget
Both single and of the parish.
By Licence

In the general area, there's a baptism in Tottenham, 2 April 1780, of a William Goddard, parents William + Mary. Might be connected, not sure.
Followed by that baptism of John in Edmonton in 1781

That's also the same church John married at in 1811. Thanks!
