Hiya Kimb,
A few phone calls may produce something. There's a Phone Book at www.eircom.ie It might cost less if you or your Gran can get an Eircom directory at your local library and make a note of the addresses of the Melodys living in Mayo then send your enquiries by snail mail. Someone here did draft a form to send to people who might be related.

Hi Kimb1. Have you asked your Gran who her parents/grandparents were. There are loads of Melody familys living in the Attymass area just outside Ballina. We need some names and possible dates to help you. I was over there in the summer searching for our particular branch of the Melody family and it's a nightmare. I was at the LDS the other day viewing the 1911 census and there are lots of Melody families listed on that. Let me know some names etc and I will see if I can help or at least point you in the right direction. Were any of her family farmers?
Regards
Dee Melody

I am looking for confirmation that Catherine and Bridget Crean are sisters who married Melody boys: Would also like to know name of Catherine and Bridget's parents, if possible.
Bridget Crean m. Anthony Melody (Feb 1873,Kilgarvin, Achonry)
Catherine Crean m. William Melody (Feb 1874)
One couple stood as witnesses for the birth of child, John Melody (bn Dec 1875). I have Anthony Melody family census 1901; they had 11 children; all born in County Mayo.

The civil marriage certificates will list the residence of each bride at the time of marriage (although it may not be where she was from or her family was living) and the fathers' name and occupation. Comparing the two certificates might help confirm, or rule out, that the girls were sisters.

Thanks for the info re using marriage certificates. I didn't know that. Good - again, THANKS. Judy

This family is the Mellody family discussed on Ancestry under the title "Boston Melodys".
According to this thread William's father was Anthony, and Catherine's was John.
The date of their marriage is puzzling. I've seen 1st Feb, 11th Feb and 1st May 1874 (http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632309#page/50/mode/1up).
William and Catherine had five children before moving to Blackburn in England: John (26th Dec 1875), Anthony (5th Jan 1878), Michael (15th Aug 1880), Mary (1882), and William (1884). They then appear to have had three more in England: Patrick (Q2 1891), Kate (Q1 1894), and Celia (Q3 1897).
In the 1901 census there are two families in Currower headed by Anthony and Bridget with children of the same names and roughly the same ages. The clincher is probably this odd record https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FCVF-3QS - only the younger family had an Owen.
