Title: Lynch family St Johnstown- place name
Post by: Stairheedrammy on Tuesday 31 July 18 20:30 BST (UK)
Hi folks, local knowledge required of the Raphoe district- the attachment is an extract from the baptism records of All Saints and may relate to my GGG and GG Granda's from there, the youngest I know was called Hugh Lynch.  The pic identifies Hugh and Mary Lynch as parents, and Hugh and Mary Lynch as sponsors- I'm guessing they are 2 different couples and that the words after their names are where they live- probably near or in St Johnstown. I cant read them and wondered if anyone local to there recognised the places?
Thanks in advance
Stairheed

Thanks Hallmark, the only thing I know for sure is the sons name was Hugh Lynch, and he is likely to have been born in St Johnstown around that date- I only saw the one Hugh born in the records of All Saints.  The parents first names might have been different.

That is a strange one- the extract records his baptism but as you say there is no recorded birth noted for him?

No State Registration for that Hugh!!  Not unusual!

Indeed, I know he moved to Derry by 1911 and died there some time after that.  I have the names of his children and his wife- Bella Lafferty.  I dont know his early details though.  He was a butcher in St Johnstown in later years

I think one needs to allow a wide tolerance on the birth year in this case, the 1888 marriage registration shows that Hugh was 30 (a suspiciously round figure?) while the 1901 census shows his age as 35:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Donegal/St__Johnston/St__Johnstown/1197021/

You mentioned that Hugh had moved to Derry by 1911, what age was he in the 1911 census?

I see in a previous topic that dathai highlighted the following folk in 1911, the head of household being 69 year old widowed Hugh Lynch a potato dealer (not a butcher... and the jump in age was commented on):

Here are a couple of civil registration records for you to consider...

Firstly, the death registered in Londonderry in February 1919 of a widowed Hugh Lynch with a reported age of 55 and occupation of 'Potatoe Hawker', the informant was his son Daniel Lynch, in particular, note the address of death - 17 Donegal Place:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1919/05161/4423259.pdf

Secondly, the marriage registered in Londonderry under a year later in January 1920 of a Hugh Lynch to Sarah Quigley, the groom's father stated as Hugh Lynch a butcher - note the groom's address:- 17 Donegal Place Derry:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1920/09259/5351967.pdf

Dathai's 1911 census potato dealer is looking like the same man as the 1901 butcher and cattle dealer.  If so, (notwithstanding that the 1911 census age may have been inflated due to the introduction of the Old Age Pension), then Hugh's age is simply all over the place.

In a roundabout way the point I'm making is that, in the circumstances, you might want to seriously consider the following baptism for a Hugh Lynch baptised in All Saints RC parish on 27 March 1853, parents given as John Lynch and Margaret Harkin (top of next page):
https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000631911#page/32/mode/1up

Added:
I can also see a marriage in Londonderry for a Daniel Lynch and Elizabeth O'Donnell in 1922, the groom's father given as Hugh Lynch a butcher, the groom's address as... 17 Donegal Place.

There are quite a few children listed for John Lynch and Margaret Harkin, stretching from Hugh baptised in 1853 to Catherine born in 1875, for example, here is the latter, the address is Carrickdawson townland in the civil parish of Taughboyne:

And again from All Saints RC parish, the marriage of John Lynch and Margaret Harkin on 19 February 1852 (bottom of following page):

Wow, you guys are skilled at this.  The later information ties in mainly with other snippits I found that I thought were linked.  I will take some time later today to see how this all fits with what I already thought.  The other birth cert I was looking at was for 1864 with John and Mary Lynch as parents- so some thinking for me to do.  Thanks again

Oh, Hugh's age jumps from 35 in 1901 to 69 by 1911!!!  Both from census information and definitely the same and right person

Bingo!

A Hugh Lynch of Meaves Row on the Lecky Road Derry applied for the Old Age Pension in 1915 and gave his parents as John Lynch and Margaret Harkin of Carrickadawson, Taughboyne, a search of the 1851 census found both his parents living separately (details given), this ties in with them not yet being married, in line with my Reply #17.

The following might have relevance (from the PRONI Will Calendars Index):
Probate of the Will of John Lynch late of Carrickadawson County Donegal Farmer who died 17 August 1896 granted at Londonderry to Charles Harkin Farmer.

Phenomenal work folks and many thanks for this- you have confirmed much of what I previously thought and put me on the right track in regards Hugh seniors birth, death and parents.  Hats off to you while I try to put this together in my head.
