This is very brief, but might be a starting point

The regiment was in England 1838-43. Sent in 1843 to South Africa (7th Xhosa War). I can't see a record of the regiment stationed in Montevideo - perhaps they were in the harbour en-route to South Africa?

ADDED: https://archive.org/stream/historythstnott01dalbgoog/historythstnott01dalbgoog_djvu.txt gives more detail of the regiment's movements, but it's an automated transcript and not easy to read.

The 2nd Battalion of 45th Foot served in Montevideo in 1846. Per John Ellis' army record he was there for 10 months. and in the Cape of Good Hope for 6 months (also nearly 12 years in the East Indies and nearly 2 years in Gibraltar).
I can't see a record of the children's births.

hi, lady kitty23. i find this interesting. my great great grandfather was also from the 45th regiment, 2nd division. he too spent time in south america before coming to the cape in 1846. i have a birth certificate of his one son, born in gibralta from the catholic church. when the 45th regiment left south africa around 1858 he and many other men decided to stay in south africa and we have been here ever since.
