I have done a lot of research over the years and find most things eventually but this one, the middle name, has me stumped. I do believe that the second letter (a c or e perhaps) has been struck out, which makes it look like Ll as if a Welsh word but this is well nigh impossible. The family name is Hann - not Hand - and they lived at Morton Engine. If anyone can throw any light on the matter it will save me a lot of head scratching. Thank you.
-
It would help if you could give us a larger clip of the sheet so we can get a better idea of the handwriting, if that would be possible.
-
Thank you Greensleeves, I have replaced the attachment.
-
If you are referring to the fourth person down, my first thought was "Heaven" even though the H is not the same as the H of "Hand".
-
Perhaps Steven spelled Steaven.

Yes I also thought maybe steaven as all the other names are mis-spelled. Thanks. Though if it's a t he normally crosses his t's.
-
I agree - it looks like Steaven but with an uncrossed 't'.
If anyone wants to see the whole page it's at HO107/312/16 f3 p4. On the pages before and after there are other examples of an uppercase S, which look the same, and you'll see that some of the names are spelled in ways that would today seem a bit unusual.
-
I had originally thought the first letter was 'L', but I do now think it's an 'S', since that bottom loop doesn't cross over the downward stroke as it would with an 'L'. And seeing the interesting spellings, I agree that it is quite likely that the name is indeed Steaven!
