Title: Mary Ann Freeman and Nathaniel Weaver
Post by: dsmillers on Wednesday 14 November 18 13:59 GMT (UK)
I have found on ancestry 3 marriage banns 31 Oct 1841, 7 Nov 1841 and 14 Nov 1841 for Mary Ann Freeman and Nathaniel Weaver at Gloucester St John the Baptist.
However there was never a marriage. On 16 April 1842 Mary Ann Freeman gave birth to a son Nathaniel Weaver Freeman. But his birth and baptism records state Mary was a single mother. What happened to Nathaniel Weaver the father - I cannot find a death for him around 1841/1942...

Have you made a typo re dates -should they be 1841/2 not 1941/2

if so Nathniel Weaver Preston b 1842 had "unknown" entered as his father on marriage and  witnesses were Mary A & Henry preton (I think his mother nd stepfather??)

The father may not have died just got cold feet about the wedding and impending fatherhood.

There's a Nathan Weaver age 19 in Boddington Glos 1841 that could be him.

James Weaver 60
Rosehannah 55
James 25
Nathan 19

Boddington is very close to Staverton - where Mary Ann was from, according to the 1851/1861 census when she was Mary A Preston aged 28/39.

1851: HO107/1961/96/11

1861: RG9/1764/84/12

Baby Nathaniel would have been conceived a few weeks after the 6 June 1841 census.  Perhaps they rushed into engagement once it was known Mary Ann was pregnant, but did not go ahead with the marriage.

Mary Freeman, 20, was in Deerhurst in the 1841 census, in the household of ag lab Benj[amin] Freeman (whose name ties in with her father as stated on her 1847 marriage to Henry Preston).

Possible baptism, 21 Dec 1817 at Staverton:

Mary Freeman, the daughter of Benjamin (labourer) & Charlotte, of Staverton Town.
