Title: Redbourn Grocer.
Post by: toby webb on Monday 11 February 19 09:10 GMT (UK)
I have been trying to determine which grocer's shop in Redbourn was run by George Lonnon.
Comparing the Post Office Directories of 1870 with previous editions, I find that Josiah Dickens & John Evans's businesses had disappeared and George Lonnon gets listed. Is there any way I can get closer than that?
Thanks, Toby.

Hi

According to 1871 census. George Lonnon was a
"Grocer" in Redbourn Hight Street, next door to the Painters Arms

The pub was run by John & Mary Walker.
1891 they were running "another" High Street pub ( maybe same one but renamed )
[ The Crown Inn ]
[ 1890/John Walker/& Plumber/../../Post Office Directory ****
[ 1891/John Walker/Painter & Publican/48/Hythe, Kent/Census ****
https://pubshistory.com/HertsPubs/Redbourn/Crown.shtml (https://pubshistory.com/HertsPubs/Redbourn/Crown.shtml)
[ 2009 the pub would seem to be "Romanos" and then, at some point "Venezia's"]

Thanks for the leads. I thought therefore that the 1861 Census might help but have not found a Painters Arms. T

There are surnames "Lunn" and "Hurron" in Redbourn.
Maybe parents/sibling Lonnon/Lunnon

Lunn is just about possible in my view but Hurron seems too far fetched. London, Lonon & Lonnon are acceptable really on the grounds that in coarse speech they all sounded the same, and the vicar or enumerator wrote down what he heard using the spelling most familiar. T

"Hurron" could be a straight transcription error.
"Lunnon"
Provided in order that you may include/exclude as you wish.

Also, now that it has been pointed out, previous typo ( reply #4 ] now corrected . . . . .
" 1871 1881 doesn't name it either "

Could be. Can't be too cautious with transcriptions. I have seen so many howlers. Will keep this in mind. Thanks. T
