Trying to find a birth record for Clara Moyle baptised 5 July 1898 residence Cury to William Henry and Eliza Jane Moyle. we have a birth date of 24 May 1898. From the 1939 register her birth date is 24 May 1897. Would like to obtain a birth certificate as we believe the time to the next birth in 1899 of Katie my wife's grandmother is too short. Clara died in Helston 1986. Any help is appreciated. Len

Thank you CaroleW
We already have all that information and the main object is to try and get a birth certificate for Clara and being one of 12 siblings she is becoming a bit of a mystery. We met her many times when she lived in Helston. In her earlier years she lived in Twickenham hence the 1939 register information of her birth date. Once again thank you we will keep plodding on to find out.

8 of the children were baptised in Helston and the dates of birth were recorded on the baptisms. But, Clara was one of the 4 baptised in Cury and dob has not been transcribed. Clara, Edith Annie, Lucy and Leslie were all baptised 5 July 1898.
Birth regs
Leslie june qtr 1893 Helston vol 5c pg 175
Louisa march qtr Helston 1895 vol 5c pg 183
Edith Annie sept qtr Helston 1896 vol 5c pg 166
The next daughter Katie was registered jan qtr 1899 and her baptism gives dob as 24 Jan 1899, so the 1897 date would like more likely but no birth reg showing. Have you tried the registrars in Truro in case it's one that didn't make its way to the GRO?
registration @ cornwall.gov.uk - without the gaps.

Hello Len, do you have a dob for Edith Annie? If she was born in Sept 1896, it still makes it tight for a May 1897 birth for Clara. More feasible if Edith was born in July 1896.
Just wonder if Clara was the illegitimate child of a relative. Given the 1901 census says Clara was born in Sithney, there is an Ann/Anne MOYLE there, a single woman, who bp three children - two in 1894 (one born 1888) and one in 1896 (born July 1895). Also a stillborn child in 1890. Did William have a sister Ann/Anne?
If there's no birth registration at all, it could be explained by illegitimacy. I've seen two instances where that happened, and also another where the adoptive parents gave their own names on the birth registration.

Just to save any duplication of effort on Ann MOYLE the ‘single woman’ in the previous post, she looks like an unlikely mother for Clara. In short, it seems she was Ann WINN who married David MOYLE, he died, and she then lived with William OSMOND. She had a baby before marrying David, a baby by David, then quite a few by William, all with surnames differing between civil registrations, parish records and censuses. However, in 1891 and 1901 she seems to be in a settled family unit that might make her unlikely to give up yet another child.
I've kept notes if anyone else is researching this particular branch of the MOYLE family.

Thank you, Osprey, and Flemming
We know most of the information that you have kindly looked up for us. We are sure that Clara was issue of William Henry and Eliza Jane in that she looked so much like her sister Katie. you show Katie’s birth as 24 Jan 1899 and this was always the date, she celebrated her birthday. We obtained her Birth Cert which has the date of 28 Feb 1899 so a discrepancy there. We think that with so many children born to her, mistakes were made when registering their births. And baptisms were done in job lots. 12 children born 8 survived 4 died in infancy. Sometime after the birth of their last child Cecil who died within months of his birth in 1903. The Father William Henry appears to have disappeared off the face of the earth. Maybe USA ?

Did he just vanish? Are there are any stories about it in the family?
There are a few deaths/burials in Cornwall for William MOYLE born c. 1865. Do none of them fit? What makes you think he went abroad?
There’s an intriguing entry for 1908 in Redruth Workhouse. The coroner ordered a special graveside service only. Helston had its own workhouse but you never know.
With the birth registrations, I know one family where the accuracy depended on who did the registering. The mother got it right, the father got it wrong (including the names sometimes).

Story has it he went to America which appear in some Barnados records for 2 of the boys

the dob on Katie's birth cert could be because they were late in registering her birth and the date given was within 6 weeks of the registration to avoid a fine.
