Title: Burial places

I have many family members who died in lowland Scotland between 1790 and 1855. I know burial records for the period are scant and in most cases no longer exist.

But where were people buried in this period? They can’t all have been buried in local churchyards surely?

The vast majority were with some in private burial grounds

Which part of Scotland were your ancestors from?

Added - you could check the Kirk Sessions records in addition to burial records.

In Glasgow the public cemeteries opened in response to the scandal of private mass-graves used during the cholera/typhus outbreaks of the 1840's.

Thanks for responses. The ancestors are from Ayrshire towns and villages. Over the years, I looked at mon inscriptions etc , and Scotlandspeople records but never found any reference.
