Title: Sri Lanka. British Army . 1857 on
Post by: wilcoxon on Sunday 14 April 19 11:52 BST (UK)
I have a John Malone  born 1833 Tipperary,  he married in 1852 when he was a Corporal  in the 50th regiment at Fullwood Barracks Preston. By 1857 he is in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka and has 2 children born there in 1857 and 1859. A son was born and died in Colombo in 1861 as did his wife.

I have searched but can`t find any details of  why the Army was there.
The next time I find him is in 1871 at Wrexham.  Aged 37,  pensioner late 50th reg,  now permanent staff Royal Denbigh militia.
I can`t find any Army Records  or pension details for him.
He has remarried Elizabeth Mckay,  possibly in Ireland.

Can anyone help please.

His army file is on FindMyPast: https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=GBM/WO97/2044/130/001&parentid=GBM/WO97/2044/423470

He spent 6 years in Ceylon on garrison duty, 2+ years in Malta, Turkey and the Crimea, 5+ years in the Australian colonies.

You'll find him in the UK campaign medal rolls on Ancestry: 3314 Color Sergeant John Malone, 50th regiment. He had medals for campaigns in New Zealand and The Crimea, also a Turkish war medal, presumably for service in the Crimea.

Thank you so much.  I did find countless John Malone`s on Anc but obviously don`t how to find the right one.
I  found bits about him in the Welsh newspapers , but again not this one full of information.
He was a land agent / caretaker at Stansty Hall in 1901, I can`t find him in 1911 but as you can see he was still around  and there in 1913 . Various newspapers spell Stansty wrongly. Stone blind  ;D
