In browsing some transcripts of the 1861 Scotland census, I found a group of people (mostly children) with an elderly Irish matriarch all living in the Tinker's Hut in Kilmun. Just wonder if anyone knows what this might have been - perhaps a genuine tinker's hut or just known as such. It had three rooms, apparently, so must have been a bit bigger than a shed!

Hi, I'm taking a guess that it would be some sort of stone bothy - a but and ben (except with a three rooms rather than divided into two)….but not sure.

Added - Actually on fully reading the whole article ::) , I have come to the conclusion the "Tinker's Hut" was indeed a hut - maybe not made of stone at all.

Hello Looby, how absolutely fascinating but also terribly sad, although Janet sounds like an indomitable woman. I wonder where all the grandchildren came from over the years. The Craig connection is explained, and also William McCallum being the orphan of Janet's brother (although the 1871 census says she's his mother...) - but Morrison, Small and then the Townleys? Bit of a tangled web, although I wonder if they were extended family just called 'grand children' for convenience.
I didn't understand the bit about Nancy Steel but have found her in 1851 (68, widow) with the indomitable Janet (30, daughter) and Elizabeth McCallum (17, daughter) in North Knapdale, all of them wandering tinkers and all born in Scotland. Nancy would have been 51 when Elizabeth was born ???
Further back in 1841 in North Knapdale, there's William McCallum (1761 Argyll), Christian (1769 Argyll), Margaret (1781 Ireland) and Ann Steel McCallum (1781 Ireland), plus six McCallum children born 1825-1835 in Scotland, most of which seem too young to be the offspring of the ladies of the house (nothwithstanding any rounding down of ages).
All very confusing, but many thanks for finding the article - much appreciated.

some i know lived in greenock, thats opposite kilmun on the clyde
others now live in lanark,
there was a connection to burkes and drysdales any other i m not aware of
my father would have known but he s long passed away

I am the 4th great grandnephew of Janet McCallum. The old solider mentioned in the 1841/51 census is my 6 great grandfather. (William McCallum)
I have a story on Janet McCallum that was published in the History Scotland magazine. I can share it.
I’m glad that I stumbled across this on Roots chat. Tomorrow me, my mum and my family will be going to the church yard at Kilman at the Holly Loch in Dunoon and we will be laying a plaque dedicated to Janet McCallum.
She is buried in an unmarked paupers grave and I know exactly where she is.
