I am looking into my son in laws tree, his father as far as he knows was born on 20 April 1934 in Edinburgh, I have been in touch with the GRO Edinburgh and they say they have no record for that name or date in Edinburgh. His father died 2011, my son in law isn’t in touch with any of his relatives to ask any further questions.
I haven’t done any research in Scotland before would appreciate ideas of where to look next.

Get the 2011 death certificate for the father.
https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
In scotland use SP, nothing else is close to being useful

According to the index on Scotlands People there were 2 William Dickson's born in Edinburgh in 1934.
1. William Dickson 1934 reference no 685/2 859 - Registered in the St Andrews district of Edinburgh
2. William Edward Dickson 1934 reference no 685/3 1120 - Registered in the Canongate district of Edinburgh.
Can't understand why GRO Edinburgh said they had no record. What other information were you able to supply them with to do their search?

Where did your William Dickson die in 2011?
I cannot see a relevant death on scotlands people Index using the birth year of 1934.

Nessa, were your son in law's parents married? If so, would be good to check the marriage reg to see what it said re parents or father (if marriage took place in England or elsewhere).

If the actual birth date was different from the above then it's possible the person dealing with the enquiry wasn't forthcoming with that info. or felt they couldn't give that info?
Some are not as helpful as others unfortunately.

Thank you for your replies, I have both of those birth certificates and they are not the right ones. He died in Bridlington Yorkshire. I have the marriage certificate which gives his father as William Dickson deceased the marriage was in 1958 Yorkshire. My son in law thought his father wS born there, as he was. The William Dickson born 1934 joined the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards.

Has son in law considered requesting his father's military records? www.gov.uk/get-copy-military-service-records
I have my father's from WW2 and they had a lot of personal information on them, apart from military details.

Did his marriage entry in 1958 show him with the middle initial of M?
William M Dickson
3rd Qrt 1958
Claro, Yorkshire West Riding
Was there an occupation for his father given on his marriage reg? Alive or deceased noted?

We have talked about that thought we would try finding a birth certificate first, he has taken a dna test the results should be here any day now. If we sent for his military records would they give next of kin information? . I understand my son in law would have to apply for them.
I have his dads military rank and number from his baptism record.
It doesn’t help matters that he is estranged from his family.
Thank you for your help.

Could have been born 35/36 rather than 1934.

I have his dads military rank and number from his baptism record.
That helps a lot when applying for these records. It will have all his personal details. My father's included full birth details, parents, school history etc
Dickson is a really common name unfortunately.
I think applying for his service records is a good way to go. It cost us £30 when we applied (not sure how much the fee is now). You need to also enclose William's 2011 death certificate.
