Title: Lawson family
Post by: lossie38 on Friday 31 May 19 05:47 BST (UK)
I am looking for James Lawson who was the father of James Lawson who married Helen Davidson 04.06.1815 @ Garvock Kincardineshire. Would like to know where and when James the father was  born, and who he married, also where and when he died.  Have been able to earmark several possibilities but cannot ascertain if they are correct. Would appreciate any help.

Hi Garstonite,
Re James Lawson snr.
His son James born 10.05.1790@Uras, Dunottar. Witnesses at birth registration show one from Uras and one from Arbuthnott.
James Snr would have been born 1770 plus/minus 10 yrs
Scotlands people show several other possibilities in addition to yours'
22.03.1758 James Lawson son of John Lawson/ ??                     Dunottar
13.03.1759    "         "         "   "   David Lawson/ ??                   Fordoun
22.05.1764    "         '          "   "  David Lawson/ Isobel Christie  Laurencekirk
Have also been through Alison Mitchell's Monumental Inscriptions but at present James remains undetected. Any further help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Many thanks your help.      Lossie38

So it is reasonable to suppose that the parents of James who married Helen Davidson might have been James and Margaret, and that Helen's parents might have been John and Nancy. Do you know the names of Helen's parents?

Hi Forfarian,
The parents of Helen Davidson were John Davidson and Elizabeth Pyper. The nearest Margaret I can find is Margaret Fife who married a James  Lawson on 12.09.1790 at Tough (Aberdeen}, which is the same year as James jnr was born (10.05.1790), this looks like a possibility. I am still searching for place and date of James Snr death which I believe is around 1835. Thanks for your help, i will continue the search.

Hmm. So they didn't follow the naming tradition exactly. If they had, their first child would have been Elizabeth not Nancy. So while it is still likely that James' father was James, it casts a bit more doubt on  his mother being Margaret.

Please don't just cast round looking for people who might fit. Tough is some distance from Dunnottar and Arbuthnott, and there will be dozens if not quite hundreds of Margarets born in say a 50-mile radius from Dunnottar whose birth and baptism records have not survived.
