John Todd was born in Billington in 1780, he married Hannah Wearmouth in Bishopwearmouth in 1801. John was a baker with ten children living in HAT CASE Sunderland. he died in 1864. I'm trying to find any information on John and his parents and grandparents. What was life like as a baker during this period. Was William Todd`born 1762 Johns Father and did he sail on a ship called the Alemene. I'm really stuck, can anyone assist please?

Hi fincagirl,
Is this John Todd a direct line in your family? His father would have had to be young at 18 to be having a son in 1780 are you sure of the connection as there are many John Todd's and William Todd's.
The Bishops Records Christenings, Marriages and Funerals for that area are the best method to align all the pieces.

Hi Neil,
I'm not 100% sure of any connections but I am almost sure that John Todd born Billingham 1780 is the GGG Grandfather of my husband Geoffrey Mark Todd (20.10.59) The Male TODD line goes like this (Father to father)
Geoffrey Mark Todd son of Malcolm Todd son of Robert Septimus Todd son of Thomas Todd son of William Todd son of John Todd. The link is almost certainly Sunderland.I am almost 99 percent sure that John Todd a baker by trade fathered at least ten children, the youngest of whom was William born 1824.(master mariner) But when it comes to the father of John Todd things get very vague and the only possibility I can find is a William Todd born in Sunderland in 1762 married to Mary? I also found a mariners record for a William Todd born 1762,Scotland who seems to be connected to a ship called the Alemene around 1795. Is this the same William and is he the father of John Todd?I agree there are Todds everywhere (sly ole Foxes heh!)

Bapt of Daug Margaret 09 Oct 1808 (3rd Daug) has John of Billingham**
Are you sure he died 1864?
I can find them (John/Hannah) 1841 Census but not 1851/1861.
A tree has a Census for John 1861 but he is a Tailor not Baker.

Just a word of caution. Please dont follow others Trees if that is where you got the info of John being born 1780.
Do your own research.
Also the 1841 Census is not accurate with peoples ages.
Also none of the John Todds who died 1864 are old enough to have married 1801.
The GRO now has Birth Reg with Mothers maiden names from Sept 1837 and Death Regs with ages from the same time.
You have to register but its free to search.

Welcome to RootsChat from me as well!
Trying to keep up with Trish is impossible :) ;) but there's a small newspaper notice for a death:
On the 22nd John Todd, baker, 82.
January 28, 1853 - Durham Chronicle - Durham, Durham, England,

Yes it's tempting to be pulled along by the trees of others but I ignore the best I can. Thank you Trish ,the Hannah Wearmouth line all figures, your information is the same as mine but I've become super confused now with her husband John Todd. I have their marriage as 21-11-1801 at St Michaels All Angels Bishopwearmouth and Hannahs father Joesph as witness but Johns birth, death and parents have me baffled. Hannah died in 1847 and it's seems her husband John went to live with their daughter Margaret (married name Tindle) as he can be seen on the 1851 census at 37 Burleigh Street Sunderland so we know he is alive in 1851 (census says he is 78 and born in 1773 but dates can be inaccurate)So John is still my stumbling block.Trish, you mention GRO, what is that please?

Sorry I forgot to say thank you for all your welcomes. I'm not great at this but I love it.

Burleigh Street
Eventually, in the 1960s, the streets around Holy Trinity Church were demolished in a massive slum clearance. They were replaced by tower blocks that carried the names of some of the former streets, such as Burleigh Garth which covered the area once occupied by Silver Street and Burleigh Street. In turn, these were demolished some twenty years later, replaced by a mixture of tower blocks and modern terraces.

Dear finca girl, Have you ever considered doing a male DNA sample for your husband to see if his male DNA matches any of the other Todd families in Scotland or Northern England?
