Title: Southwell House Newstead Grove. Nottingham
Post by: tilly25 on Sunday 15 September 19 09:24 BST (UK)
I believe the above address was a probation home for girls, does anyone know what the house was used for in 1913.
Any help gratefully appreciated

In 1913 it was a temporary rescue home for fallen women: The "Temporary Rescue and Preventive Home" per the Englishwoman's Year Book for 1914. 16 Newstead Grove.

Childrenshomes says it was opened "before 1912", had 13 places, and was for "Fallen girls; Preventative; Probation Act and prison cases from Nottingham"

There's the 1911 census - probably a bit early for your needs:

Thanks for that information, electoral register may help for 1913 depending on what time of year it was taken.

1913 Electoral Register probably won't have any women on it, and not many men?

Greater emancipation came in 1918 and 1928.

Do you think that Nottingham library would have any information about the girls that stayed at Southwell House in 1913

Maybe - worth asking.

Probably Northumberland Nottingham Archives is a better bet.

I couldn't find anything either but "Not all records held at the Archives are currently included on the online catalogue".
