Title: Primary Schools in Heywood Lancashire
Post by: AureliaSB on Thursday 24 October 19 20:57 BST (UK)
According to the 1891 census my grandfather is listed as a scholar whilst living on Peel Lane in Heywood Lancashire.
I would like to view his school records if possible but I don't know which school he attended, does anyone on the forum know how I could find out the names of the local schools in the Peel Lane Heywod area in the late 1800s that my grandfather could have attended?

To start with, have you looked at a large scale map around 1891 to see what schools were in that area?

added:
Peel Lane runs to the bottom left, under the Gas works, and between Roach Mill and Back O'Th Moss.

I have only looked at the Lancashire Mario maps so far but there aren't any overlay first edition maps to look at the past housing/schools in the area, looks like new housing has now been built on and around the Peel Lane area.

The house number my Grandfather lived in was 3 Peel Lane which will have now been demolished, also there doesn't appear to be any schools in the area, again they will probably have been demolished.

Map I posted link to shows school opposite church - St Michael's

Possibly a little far to get to?

Added: 1 mile, so not too far.  Will keep looking.

Thanks, found Peel Lane.

It's a pity the house numbers aren't shown so that I could pin point where he lived.

Yes, Ashworth, Bamford or Norden would have been quite a trek to school from Heywood.

I do not think that a mile is a long walk.

House numbers can change, unfortunately.  On the census have you looked to see which route the enumerator was recording to see which junction no 3 was nearest?

British newspaper archives have quite a few reports of 'Bamford School' but several refer to the Sunday school.  Worth investigating all of them,  or trying "Heywood School"?

Rochdale Observer 1870

ST. LUKE’S, HEYWOOD, AND ST. MICHAEL’S, BAMFORD. The teachers and scholars connected with the above schools, to the number of 600, took part in a procession, headed by the Hopwood brass band, and afterwards attended service in St. James’s Church. Refreshments were supplied in the school, and recreations indulged in. The clergy present were the Revs. T. Ramsbotham, A. Dean, J. Groves, and T. Fish. Number of teachers on the books: St. Luke’s, Heywood, 64; St. Michael’s, Bamford, 8. Male scholars: St. Luke’s, Heywood, 273; St. Michael’s, Bamford, 34. Female: St. Luke’s, Heywood, 241; St. Michael’s, Bamford, 29. Volumes in library: St. Luke’s, Heywood, 800; St. Michael’s, Bamford, none.

St Luke's is 0.6 miles?

What school records are you looking for?
Find my Past has some admission registers but I don’t think Heywood is included.
Have you tried Local History Archives at Heywood or Rochdale libraries? I think I have accessed records for Heywood at Bury library but that was some years ago.

"Heywood Schooldays" on Monkey Town - The History of Heywood website https://www.heywoodhistory.com/p/explore-stories.html
See also the section "The Christian Life - Religion and churches in  Heywood". Majority of schools were likely to have been church schools.

SchoolsSearch website lists existing schools.

Lot of articles in newspaper archives about schools in Heywood, including from the Heywood Advertiser, discussion about school closures and new schools opening.

Hi AureliaSB,  I live in Heywood very close to Peel Lane, number 3 would be at the bottom end of peel lane, it divides into George st and Peel Lane into Bank Top st.  Our local history group should be able to help https://www.heywoodtown.co.uk/history-of-heywood#!

This 1891 Town Plan shows the bottom of Peel Lane https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/384923/411060/13/100766 On the 1956 plan you can see the house numbers (which start at 9) https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/384923/411060/13/101329 so numbers 1, 3, & 5, would appear to have been in the houses to the south of the Grange Inn, if that was 7.

I had a walk down this afternoon, the houses on the right of Peel Lane are odd numbers and number 39 is the last of a terraced row. Then sheltered accommodation was built were the other houses stood. peel lane is mostly Council houses. Bamford Rd Primary School was one of the closest schools to Peel Lane sadly that got pulled down several years ago. Anne

Thanks to you all for your help on this topic, there's plenty of information that has been provided for me to research about Heywood's history and in particular about the Peel Lane area during the period from the late 1880s/early 1890s when my Grandfather lived at 3 Peel Lane next door but one to the old original Grapes Inn 7 Peel Lane, which was demolished and rebuilt on the opposite side of Peel Lane.

I wonder if someone has some old photos of the original Grapes Inn which could possibly show the houses numbered 1-5 attached to it?
