Title: The White Swan at Pease Pottage about 1861
Post by: limehouse79 on Friday 08 November 19 14:55 GMT (UK)
I am researching William Comber and his family of Pease Pottage.  In the 1861 census William is at The White Swan, Pease Pottage.  I cannot find anything about this pub only information on The Black Swan.  Were they the same pub does anyone know.  William later became a landlord of The Grapes.
Thanks for any help.

Beerhouse?
1866 Sussex directory has Wm. Comber, beer retailer, Pease Pottage, in Slaugham.

Sad newspaper story, 9 Sep 1865, about the inquest into the death of son Caleb
SLAUGHAM.
Accidental Death by Falling into a Tank.—On Thursday last, L. G. Fullagar, Esq., held an inquest at the dwelling-house of William Comber, on the body of his son, Caleb Comber, who was drowned under the following circumstances:—Mary, the wife of William Comber, beershop keeper, deposed that the deceased was their child, and was one year and four months old. On Wednesday, about half; past one, she saw deceased go out of the tap-room door. He had a little hat in his hand, and no one was with him. A few minutes after she missed him, and sent the servant into the garden to look for him, while witness went the other way. She found him in the tank, face downwards, floating on the water. She pulled him out, and he appeared to be quite dead...(continues)

Baptism of Caleb in Slaugham in 1864 gives his father William as Beershop Keeper

Jonw65 Thank you for that newspaper report. I hadn’t seen it -very sad but gives more detail to William’s family.  I’m only now starting to research the Combers in more detail and it seems there is a lot of them!  Thanks again :)

Good evening,

I know this is an old post from 2019 but just came across it whilst browsing. The White Swan was in Brighton rd, Pease Pottage. About half a mile from the Black Swan. It's name was changed to The Grapes at some time.

Also found this piece;

(Linda, you may already know this but William Comber (1812-1871) married Mary Longley (1825-1900) in May 1847 and by 1861 they were running the White Swan, the former name of the Grapes.
They raised their six children there: William, Walter, Fanny, Emma, Philadelphia and Mary.
To supplement the family income William was also described variously as a gardener and agricultural labourer.
William died in 1871, and Mary continued to run the pub until she died in 1900. .
I am sorry but I have no photographs of the Comber family to send you.)
