Can anyone help? I am looking for the parents of Marjorie Josephine Rawson, born 11 August 1885 in Portsea. Marjorie was the mother of Lieutenant Commander Malcolm David Wanklyn VC, DSO and 2 bars. (I have lots of info about him) Her husband was William Lumb Wanklyn and they married in Carlow, Ireland in 1906. "Malcolm Wanklyn was encouraged into a career in submarines by Lieutenant Alec Anderson, the only son of his mother's eldest sister". I do not know this lady's name but as the quote says "eldest sister", I presume she had other siblings. Other than this I can find very little other info about her.

The GRO index for her birth has

Edward Albert's burial at Cheltenham gives him as retired Army surveyer 12.7.1929 12 Spa Buildings age 85
There is a sister Dorothy Hope Rawson born Ireland 1880 and brother Robert Ian Rawson 9.4.1875 also in Ireland.
You may have to bite the bullet and pay £7 for the birth certificate

Thanks so much for the help so far, I will follow the leads. If I can find a sister who married an Alec Anderson it will help confirm it.

You can view the marriage certificate of Marjorie & William here:
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01omg/
This gives you her father's name and I think confirms ciderdrinker's theory.
Using the same site to search for Dorothy's birth, you will find both parents' names confirmed.
Dorothy married a Henry Thomas in Carlow in 1904.

Added: I think Marjorie's father was a retired army surgeon, rather than surveyor.

An account of Agnes Rawson's funeral in 1932 lists her grandsons as David Wanklyn, Patrick Wanklyn, Mr B Thomas of the Royal Artillery. Her two daughters are Mrs Anderson & Mrs Wanklyn. A Mr David Anderson is also mentioned but the relationship is not stated.

That is fantastic Little Nell. Thanks to you, Ciderdrinker, Jamjar and Rosie99 for all your help. I wonder who married Alec Anderson though???

It was Agnes Nora Rawson. She married Thomas Anderson in Carlow in 1893. You can find her marriage certificate and her birth certificate on the Irish Genealogy site. Agnes died in 1957, Thomas Anderson died in 1927 in Scotland. Alec died in 1922.
Henry Melville Thomas (Dorothy's husband) was a distinguished officer in the army died 1940. Dorothy died in 1926. Their son Robert was also a distinguished soldier. He died in 1942.
There was another daughter of Edward & Agnes, Margaret Rawson who married Charles Dickinson in 1901 in Ireland.

Thanks so much Nell. I have been able to make links that I had been really having problems with and have been able to add over a dozen persons to this part of my tree.
