Title: ancestry dna
Post by: Laini on Tuesday 12 November 19 11:54 GMT (UK)
Hi All

Thinking of getting an Ancestry DNA kit. Do I need an Ancestry account to access any matches, messages etc?

Thanks
Elaine

You will have a DNA account.
You are paying to access you matches and message them when you pay for the DNA kit, you will however only be able to use features on the DNA part of the site so for example a match with a tree but not linked to their DNA won't be viewable and only a small section of their tree will be viewable if it is linked to their DNA.

You need to create an account to activate your kit, but it can be a free account. You would be able to see you DNA results including ethnicity and match list and connect your results to a tree. If you want to be able to view the trees of your matches then you will need to subscribe.

My younger daughter has requested a DNA kit for Christmas.
She has always shown an interest in my Family tree investigations, unlike my older
daughter who famously said to me "Why are you interested in all these dead people?" ::)
I have a tree on Ancestry, how does she connect her DNA to my tree? Is it possible?
Simple instructions please 8)

She activates her kit by creating a free account with her own email address. Then she opens the DNA page on her account. Goes to Settings and scrolls down to Sharing Preferences where she can send you an invitation to her results. The various options are View, Collaborate or Manage. An email from Ancestry will arrive in your inbox. Follow the instructions to accept the invitation. Get back to us when you have done that and we can guide your through connecting her DNA result to her profile in your tree.

I am looking for a good deal , its currently AUD$109 until 25/11

I am hoping and expect a significant reduction on Black Friday - would that be correct?

I'm not sure of the exchange rate* but it's on offer here for £59 +shipping instead of £79 + shipping .
As far as I can remember £59 is the lowest it's been.

*£57.34

It looks as though your AUD$109 may already be the discounted price. Check to see if there is a banner on the page giving a date for how long that offer will run.

Until Monday the 25th

Black Friday is the 29th

The cynic in me says they are inducing people to buy now rather than wait till the sale day

The Ancestry UK offer is only 'shippable' to British Isles and Channel Islands addresses.  Today's sterling exchange rate is A$1.90, so it's near enough the same offer in either currency.

You may get a small additional discount if you wait or you may not. Nobody knows until it happens. The downside of waiting for Black Friday is that you then get caught up in the high volume of kits being processed in the Black Friday and Christmas rush so you may have to wait longer for your results to come through  :)

I ended up paying $88AUD + $30 shipping -my cynicism was correct

Received the kit from an Australian shipper within the week , will spit  and post tomorrow.

I wont expect any results until the end of January which I am looking forward to - now to look at subscription deals  ::)

Results yesterday 19/1

Quite happy and appreciate the speed over the Christmas holiday period.

Now to sort through the wonderful names. I like the layout and set up. Seems very functional and easy to navigate

But as to the original question - if I want any more information on links I get the Join page

Your match list and basic information about each match are covered by the fee you paid for your DNA test. If you want to view the full trees for your matches then you have to subscribe for access to that service.
