Title: Curragh camp
Post by: Lisa simmonds on Sunday 17 November 19 00:29 GMT (UK)
I am trying to trace the mckinn side of my family, but have hit a brick wall

My GGgrandad Robert Herbert was in the 14th regiment & was based at the curragh from 1871 he married an irish girl called Maria Mckinn in 1878, i have a copy of the marriage certificate from ballysax church & it says she also lived at Curragh Camp at the time of marriage & i cant work out why, at first i thought maybe her father was also in the army, but her father who according to the marriage certificate was Charles Mckinn who was a servant.
I can not trace any birth reg. anywhere for maria mckinn (b.1859) or her father Charles Mckinn or any marriage details for him

I do know maria mckinn & my GGgrandad travelled to the east indies etc, yorkshire & had children in numerous places then back to surrey where my grandad was born & finished his army career & on all census' from 1891 it is stated that she was born in ireland in 1859.

Any help in resolving these mysteries would be appreciated

Civil registration of births only commenced in Ireland in 1864.
For earlier dates you will have to look for baptisms in church records.

Civil registration of non Catholic Marriages commenced in 1845, and in 1864 for all marriages.

Hallmark,

Thanks,  that is the marriage certificate i have a copy of, but unfortunately that is where i loose the trail.  I have tried variations of the spelling mckinn.
Also, i am not sure whether this is a catholic or non-catholic church.

Lisa,
Church of Ireland, same as Church of England, it's non Catholic.
For non Catholic you have to go to PRONI (Public Records of Northern Ireland) takes a while and is expensive.
look at this link, it may help.

I have searched several sites for Charles McKinn none listed in any of them, sorry.
Can't find her birth either.

????

PRONI only hold the baptism and marriage records on microfilm for the NI counties and Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan. Not for Co Kildare.

Lisa (by the way welcome to RootsChat  :) ) should contact the RCB Library for CoI records.

Edited to add:

It is not expensive in PRONI. When visiting, it’s only £0.25 each to photocopy and produce a single paper copy up to and including A3.

Thankyou for searching, i already tried those sites, to no avail. I have also looked up different variations of the spelling of mckinn, as i thought mccann may sound similiar but there are a few maria mccann's of the same era but do not list a charles as the father.
I was also wondering if as a minor on marriage, would only a father be able to give permission.
