Title: Abraham Stevens, when did he die?
Post by: a chesters on Thursday 28 November 19 01:55 GMT (UK)
I have Abraham Stevens, born 1768 in Cornwall, baptised 20 November 1768 at St. Hilary.

He married Elenor King 15 November 1794 at Germoe, Cornwall.

I have two records for Abraham Stevens death, but which is the correct one?

One is at Phillack 10 April 1825 aged 58. That could be correct, but I also have his death at Phillack 12 December 1834, with no age recorded.

I am leaning to the 1825 date, but would like confirmation to make sure.

Any help would be very gratefully received.

If it helps on FindMyPast the 12 Dec 1834 burial of Abraham Stevens lists his age as 22.   This is a transcription

Thank you all for your help. Just to add to the confusion, it is about this time that there is the change of spelling from Stephens to Stevens, so sorting them out gets ...............interesting :-X :-X

Kay99, that would be for Abraham, son of Abraham and Elenor, as osprey mentions regarding the age.

rosie99, going on the information you all have supplied, I will go with the 1825 burial for the Abraham Stevens I am looking for.

osprey, that link you have provided has Abraham Stevens buried 12 Dec 1834, and also Abraham Stephens buried 23 Dec 1834 aged 2 weeks. He would be the son of Thomas Stephens and Elizabeth Dawn. The baptism shows the spelling as Stephens, but the burial as Stevens. mutter mutter...................................

Again, many thanks for your interest and help.

Spellings weren't fixed back then - so not really a "change" of spelling?

Also, names were most often written by a Registrar or religious cleric - who often wrote what they heard.

KG, I have found the spelling drama with others I am checking, and it does make life interesting trying to equate a child to a parent at times.

It does not help when using some web sites search even if you put Stevens + 'similar sounding'  it still does not find Stephens

Don't get me started on that :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X

One of the other side of OH's line is Huthnance. Sounds as though it should have no problems, as it is not a common name. Ha!!!!!!

I hate to think how often that would be wrongly transcribed

Even the Australian micro fiche of the Colonial period get it wrong, for one or two of the family which migrated in 1839, even with the  "official" shipping report ::)
