Title: Wight burials
Post by: jo1962 on Saturday 14 December 19 12:21 GMT (UK)
Hi all,
I'm wondering where my Wight ancestors may be buried. I have found a newspaper article that says they  both died in 1844 in Portobello, 'lately residing at 'Annanadale street, Leith.' I've looked on Scotlands people for a burial record but can't find one.
Any help will be very much appreciated.
Thanks
Jo  :)

Archibald Wight died 6th December 1844, Elizabeth Hume Wight, his Wife, she died 17th December 1844.
Was his wife Elizabeth Hume or Wight, that is, Elizabeth Hume married to Archibald Wight, or was she Elizabeth Hume Somethingelse, Hume being her middle name, married to Archibald Wight?

Archibald Wight died 6th December 1844, Elizabeth Hume Wight, his Wife, she died 17th December 1844.
Was his wife Elizabeth Hume or Wight, that is, Elizabeth Hume married to Archibald Wight, or was she Elizabeth Hume Somethingelse, Hume being her middle name, married to Archibald Wight? This matters because in Scotland a woman does not lose her maiden surname on marriage, and in the 1840s she may be recorded by her maiden name rather than her husband's name.

The Scotsman and the Caledonian Mercury both say, "At Portobello, on the 6th instant, Mr Archibald Wight, late of Ormiston". I have not found in either an announcement of Elizabeth's death.

Online sources (I know, never trust anything you find online unless it's an image of an original document) suggest that Archibald Wight was the brother of David Wight of Ormiston. If so, might they have been buried in a family grave or vault in Ormiston?

Thank you both for your replies.  I have a newspaper article for 1846 that is appealing for any information about the whereabouts of their son William who went missing in 1837, the article states that both parents died in 1844. Based on this I searched Scotsland people, I found an inventory for Elizabeth, this is how I found out the date of her death. Her maiden name was Hume by the way. This is from Scotlands People:

Wight
Elizabeth ,Mrs
31/7/1844
alias Hume, residing at No.20 Annandale Street of Edinburgh
Inventory
Edinburgh Sheriff Court Inventorie

As far as I'm aware Archibald didn't have a brother called David, though he did have an uncle, the brother of his father who was called Andrew.

I haven't managed to find them in the 1841 census.

Thanks again, much appreciated.

My mistake: Archibald Wight did indeed have a brother called David who died in 1830. A distant relative on ancestry sent me a photo of the memorial where David is buried with his wife, parents and a couple of siblings.  No mention of Archibald.

There's a tree here which you could use as a finding aid
https://www.geni.com/people/Archibald-Wight/6000000000042657929
though it commits the cardinal sin (and in Scotland error) of listing wives only by their husbands' surnames so you have to click on each one separately to get their real surnames.
