Hi everyone,
I am researching a Crotty family who lived around Killashandra, Cavan.
I have information on the marriage of Thomas Crotty and Rose Ann Duignan, 24 Feb 1870, Killeshandra.
And their children: William 1871, Kate/Catharine 1873, John 1875, Thomas 1877 and James 1881.
But am looking for birth/baptism and burial/death for Thomas Crotty, their father and his father William Crotty.
I am also hoping to find who Thomas Crotty's mother was and names of any of his siblings.
I hope someone can help. Thank you.

Hi,
Thanks for replying. I already have any information from Civil Records from IrishGenealogy.ie - I was hoping to find baptisms for pre-1864.
Is there a place where these are indexed and searchable?

Hi Jeaster1,
I remember the name Crotty when my family visited relatives in Killeshandra in the early 1960s.
If I remember rightly we used to buy ice creams and sweets from Crotty’s Ice Cream in Killeshandra when we were there on school holidays.
Don’t know if this helps. :)

Church Marriage record LINK (https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634866#page/6/mode/1up) unfortunately does not show mother's name
Marriage of Margaret CROTTY in Jan 1870 on the same page
Baptism of Margaret CROTTY on Jul 12 1838 LINK (https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634864#page/25/mode/1up)
half way down left hand page and difficult to read
parents William CROTTY and Margaret SHERIDAN of Lahard
I cannot see a baptism for Thomas or a marriage for William and Margaret
HOWEVER! editted to add
1841 census shows CROTTY family at Lahard LINK (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1841/Cavan/Tullyhunco/Killashandra/Lahard/14/)
Age for Margaret ties in with the baptism shown
Age for Thomas implies he was born c1829
A William CROTTY is shown at Lahard on the Griffiths Valuation LINK (http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=doNameSearch&familyname=crotty&firstname=william&baronyname=&countyname=CAVAN&unionname=&parishname=&Submit.x=50&Submit.y=17&Submit=Submit)
This could be the father or son however

Wow! That's a great find - well done and thank you.
I just need to consider now how likely it is to be the same family. Very likely - but Thomas Crotty would have been 41 when he married and 52 when his last child was born. Not impossible and I know older marriages often happen in rural Ireland.
Will look for some other sources to help too - thanks again.

I also found this return: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/c19/007246503/007246503_00220.pdf
which suggest that a Bridget was the mother of William Crotty until she died in 1835 - would explain why eldest daughter is called Bridget and a younger one Margaret.

It does seem probable that this is the correct family
It is strange the number of missing deaths/records but not unusual

Are there several missing deaths records then? I've only seen one for Bridget Crotty - I'd already figured his mother was a Bridget through other Crotty family. Only strange thing is the age given is '43' - she couldn't be 43 if he was 43 in 1841?!

There were fees and fines for not registering BDMs
If there was no will or probate issue many women and children's deaths were not registered right up into the late 1900s (my own grandmother's death was not recorded in 1965!)
In the mid 1800s many issues add to "missing" records
- Catholic records were not kept; or kept in hiding until after the Roman Catholic Relief Act of 1829 and Catholic emancipation which told several decades to be brought in in full; therefore not every parish has records or if they do full records
- literacy was low so names can be misspelt by the person recording the event
- numeracy was based on seasons or notes held and many miscalculated ages or attempted to calculate based on others' ages
- Records are dependant on who was completing them and in some books you can see a large period is missing when it is more probable it was not completed rather than nothing occured
- many women stayed younger for longer in the hope of marrying?
- by 1900 many men and women started to age dramatically in the hope of a pension! The age difference between the 1901 census and the 1911 census can be many years more than just ten!
I would err on the side of keeping notes of all things probable until undisputedly refuted
It is far easier than having to search again in the future!

Great advice - thank you. Now just to find what happened to the siblings! Probably went to Canada/USA
