Title: please help marriage lookup request
Post by: indigo78 on Friday 10 January 20 18:37 GMT (UK)
Hi i'm hoping someone will be able to help me move forward in my family tree. I am looking for a marriage record for a joesph William chitty born
abt 1863 in Petersfield Sheet, Hampshire, England
D:
Jul-Aug-Sep 1948 in Surrey, England
to a Francis also named as Emily maiden name unknown
I believe they may have married in or around st saviour Chertsy.
Records show them living here in the 1901 census with a boarder named Amy Bowden.
Any info regarding these two would be gratefully recieved.

This is the one in the 1911 in Wargrave, with wife Emilie, born c 1867 Petersfield, a Domestic coachman?
Emilie born c 1868 in Bideford, Devon?

Here it suggests they were married in 1887 (14 years married, no children).

I believe they maybe the same person.
It doesnt help that on various records she seems to use different names.
I believe she was born around 1866 in Northam Devon. for the past 13 years i have been trying to find a marriage record to link the 2.

I think it is the same Joseph William Chitty - birth year variance is relatively common.

I see him as a boarder, but single in the 1891 (which doesn't match that 1911 suggested marriage year) at 11 Pont Street Mews, Chelsea.  Occupation coachman (with the other household occupants) born Petersfield, so that seems to be him

Where did the other first name Frances for Emilie come from?

Sorry - my bad - I can't subtract 14 from 1911

If the 1911 is correct, the marriage is 1897

DOH

Thank you
I have a old photograph that belonged to my late grandmother with the names Joesph william chitty and francis E Chitty written on the back. They were also both witnesses signed on my great grandmothers marriage certificate. Signed as Francis E Chitty. I'm persuming the E stands for Emily

Yes, I saw that possible death reg for her.

There's a Joseph W Chitty, widow 16/10/1862 a retired gardener in Egham, Surrey?

Well, as I'm sure you've probably thought yourself, maybe they didn't marry.

I am just looking on FindMyPast for births in Northam (reg Bideford, I should think) in 1868/9 for girls called Frances E or something which might be her.

You might have to find a few possibles there, and then follow them all through to see if any 'vanish' from records.
Even then this will only be a guess at your mysterious Frances Emilie.

Very sad not to have had children, which would have led to GRO records of Mother's Maiden Name to pin her down.

Have you checked out the Amy Bowden shown as visitor with them on the 1901?  She's also from Northam.

And I see that they are at the same address in Chelsea I saw Joseph in the 1891.

I would think that Joseph must have met the mysterious Frances (or Fanny, don't forget) Emelie (or possibly Amelia) in London.

There are still some angles to search!

Aha, as I've now found Fanny Amelia Bowden MMN Burden and made a note on Ancestry, I can see you have indeed researched her and she's on a family tree you've made!  ;)

Added:  have you been through the Northam 1891 census in detail, when Fanny Amelia is living there with her grandparents, to see whether the mysterious Frances E, who 'married' Joseph William Chitty and whom she is visiting in the 1901, is anywhere living close by?

If you've not turned up the link between the Bowden/Burdens and Frances Emelie, perhaps they were neighbours?

Added again - if I were you, I'd research ALL the children of Fanny Amelia Bowden's grandparents, her siblings etc., as it may be she is a cousin of Frances E......

Yes Fanny Amelia Bowden is my great grandmother. she was indeed visiting the chitty's at that time and later in 1917 when she married my great grandfather she was stated as living at the time of her marriage at The coach and horses a pub in chertsy Surrey which was where Thomas Chitty and frances were the pub landlords at the time.
I'm trying to trace the connection if there is one between fanny Amelia Bowden and Frances. As they were both born in Northam.

Well the coincidence of the Frances (Fanny) and Emelie (Amelia) is striking - it could very well be that they are if not siblings then cousins.  Looks in the 1891 that there are a number of grandchildren whose parents are worthwhile following up.

I'll have a little look at them all

That looks promising, Jon

I'm going through the Burdon family in Northam and Devon generally.  Lots of children, and I'm convinced that the missing woman will be one of the cousins somewhere....

Added some time later.......
not found her yet  :o
