Hi everyone,
I am back on the inhabitants of Cardington. I have a William Valentine who was supposedly (according to the 1841 census) born in Bedfordshire between 1817 and 1821 (age 20) and living in Cotton End in 1841. I can't trace a baptism in Bedfordshire. His father, in the 1841 census, was Thomas Valentine who was born c 1771. There are two marriages for Thomas in Cardington to Mary Goodship (1813) and Mary Whitamore (1807) but no Marys are on the census and I can't find a death record for a Mary Valentine. However, Thomas and William are living with (what I presume is) Mary Whitamore's brother, Joseph and family, in 1841.
William moved to Haynes in 1842 and married Martha Neal.
So, I don't have any record of the births of William, Thomas or Mary Goodship. I don't have a death record for either Mary Valentine. I have a tentative birth for Mary Whitamore in Haynes, 1786, although she is said to be a resident of Cardington on her marriage record.
Thanks,
Sian :)

The residence on a marriage record only indicates the parish a person happened to be in at the time. It is quite possible that this Mary was born and raised in Haynes and was only staying in Cardington for a short while before the marriage.

Thanks, Philip. After looking again I think that Mary married someone else.

When Thomas Valentine married Mary Goodship at Cardington on 30 Nov 1813 it doesn't say he's a widower (but then it don't say he's a bachelor either) so is he the same TV that married Mary Whitamore on 1 Jan 1807 (where it doesn't say that Mary's abode was Haynes). However in 1813 witnesses were Robert Boston & William Brown. Earlier in the month on 2 Nov 1813 Robert Boston of Wilstead marred Charlotte Goodship, witnessess Thomas Valentine & William Brown, suggesting to me that Charlotte & Mary are sisters.
Baptisms at Cardington - 27 Mar 1796 Charlotte Goodship, daughter of Thomas & Elizabeth Goodship. They baptised son John the same day. Earlier on 15 Apr 1787 they baptised daughter Mary.
Cheers John

Hi John,
Thanks for your reply. This is very confusing! A lot of things don't add up. At the moment I am veering towards the two Thomas's being different people as you suggest, and the one I am interested in married Mary Whitamore. This is basically because the Whitmore family is living with Thomas and William in 1841. If Thomas had married a second time I doubt that would happen. Without any baptisms, I am, however, a bit stuck and I am doubting a lot of my info at the moment.
There is some interesting information in your message about the witnesses which I will look into (strangely enough Mary Goodship is the granddaughter of one of my direct ancestors, Mary Redman). I think I will reset on the Valentines and try and find out more information about William Valentine and find a definite birthplace. I have a note written by my Great Grandmother which says he was born in 1818 but not where.
Thanks again. I see from a lot of your posts you know a lot about Bedfordshire.
Cheers,
Sian

1802 Land Tax for Eastcotts
Property owned by Samuel Whitbread
Thomas Valentine tenant
John Valentine tenant
John Valentine tenant
Home owned and occupied
Thomas Valentine
Could there be two Thomas Valentine's?

Hi Amondg,
Yes, I think there must be. This is very interesting information. I will pursue and see where it takes me.
Thanks,

Bedfordshire Archives Online Catalogue has a couple of QSR records 1833 & 1834 Removal Orders for Thomas Valentine, the elder and his wife Mary and children Thomas & William from Cardington to Cople; however the order was abandoned/quashed. One entry has ages Thomas 19 & William 5, the other has ages Thomas 9 & William 7. I don't know what is correct as I cannot find any baptism for either child.

Thank you JohnP-bedford,
I have had a look for those removal orders on the Beds archive site but I can't find them. Could you send a link, please? Don't know what I am doing wrong, nothing seems to come up in the search! Those records are interesting and I wonder if they just missed a 1 off Williams age. Going by the information I have he should have been about 15 at that time. Does the removal order to Cople suggest that Thomas was born there? From what I know of removal orders it is sending someone back to the place they were born so they are not a burden where they have ended up. I presume that would have meant he was the tenant of the house owned by Samuel Whitbread and not the Thomas that owned his own home.
The plot thickens!
Thanks,
Sian

Here's the link to Beds Archive catalogue search :-
http://bedsarchivescat.bedford.gov.uk/search/advanced
Enter the person as 'Valentine, Thomas' & enter words from title/content as 'Cardington'
& here are the results :-

From experience I know the links may not work as expected after some time..

I found on the 1841 census at Cotton End/Eastcotts in Cardington ---
Mary Valentine age 50, & William age 12 and Thomas age 25 with Mary also age 25 then Sarah age 5 & Joseph age 1. I think that William & Thomas are Mary Valentine's sons, & that Thomas & Mary are man & wife & Sarah & Joseph are their children.
In 1851 census in Eastcotts we have :-
Mary Valentine age 64 widow born Cotton End, with son Thomas age 36 & his wife Mary Ann age 39 and children Sarah 15, Mary Ann 8, George 4 & Jane 2.
From FreeBMD & GRO for the latter children the mother's maiden name is Turner.
Marriage at Cardington on 12 Oct 1833 of Thomas Valentine to Mary Ann Turner.
Meanwhile son William Valentine age 21 was married on 15 Nov 1849 at Cardington to Harriett Shreeves; William's father was Thomas Valentine, carrier.
1851 census has William Valentine age 22 & wife Harriett at Eastcotts
1851 census has William Valentine age 32 & family at Wilstead
I am suggested that this Mary Valentine (possibly nee Goodship?) is wife of Thomas & with him & children were the subject of this Removal Order from Cardington back to Cople (which did not get executed)
The other Thomas Valentine age 70 is living in Eastcotts on 1841 census with son William age 20 with Joseph age 50 & Rebecca Witamore & family, there is also a Mary Witamore age 75 in the household which could well be Joseph's mother. So assume this Thomas married Mary Whitamore.
