I'm looking for help in documenting the marriage of my great grandmother Jane Phillips, to her first husband, (First name unknown) Cowlishaw. He died between 1864, when my grandfather Henry Cowlishaw, later Arbery, was born, and Jane's second marriage to Sydney Arbery on 16 October 1870.
My maternal great-grandmother Jane, aged 24, was listed as Jane Cowlishaw, widow, on the marriage record when she married Sydney Arbery in 1870. Her father is named as Mark Phillips. Church Marriage records show her mother's name as Elizabeth Simmonds. Census returns show that they lived in Frampton Cotterell, just north of Bristol. Mark Phillips was a stonecutter.
From this I deduce that my great grandmother's pre-marriage name was Jane Phillips.
She also had a son, Henry Cowlishaw, born Nov 11 1864. The birth of Henry Cowlishaw is registered Q4, 1864, Clifton, 6a, 87. He is my grandfather. After her marriage to Sydney Arbery in 1870, he is listed in census returns etc as Henry C Arbery. Sydney was his stepfather.
I have tried and failed to find a record of the marriage of Jane Phillips to a Mr Cowlishaw, my putative biological great grandfather, that fits the dates, location and other family data. Ay help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for responding so quickly.
I have found Jane Phillips in census reeturns for 1851, 1861 living in her parents household. In 1871, she is listed as wife to her second husband, Sydney Arbery and her mother Elizabeth Phillips is at the same address with them.
Her first husband, Mr Cowlishaw, is more difficult to find with any certainty because I don't have his first name. However I have checked an Edward Cowlishaw, who is listed in Bristol CoE Baptismal records as the father of John Henry Cowlishaw and spouse of Jane Cowlishaw, but that turned out to be another family with several children. I've also followed up a Mr Henry Cowlishaw whose will was in probate. He was a farmer in Derbyshire but Probate also mentions a grown up son, Thomas, as executor, so that seems to rule him out.

Is it possible there never was a marriage

Hi Mabel
Was John definitely 22mths? Freebmd shows 22 so I've just checked GRO online and it also shows 22 but neither show it as months. I would usually have expected a 22mth old to be shown as 1 but you never know
-
It doesn't say months, just 22 in the age column.

Thanks for the helpful comments and additional references.
I have ordered a birth certificate for Henry Cowlishaw for father's name. Thank you Louise. John Cowlishaw 22 (if years, not months) is a possible lead too. Thank you Debra,CaroleW, Mabel Bagshawe

Assuming I am on the right lines
John Cowlishaw married Matilda Martin 1860 Bedminster

Agreed on allyour points. Also COULD the Ann Marten/Martin widow pauper listed at same address in 1861 census be Matilda's mother.
-
I think so but mispelt, if it wasn't it would be a coincidence,
Good luck with the birth cert

Obtained a copy of birth cert and it shows John Cowlishaw as father and Jane Cowlishaw born Phillips as mother. Dates and places correspond to other sources - census, baptisms etc. Many thanks for help in opening up a whole new line in my family tree
