On a birth certificate issued in 1851 the place of birth and the residence of the child and mother is given as (quite clearly) "Canal Wycombe".
The registration district is Wycombe and the Registrar's district is High Wycombe.
Can anyone shed any light on this address ?

The 1851 census address listing has Canal Side, Steers Yard, Chepping Wycombe

Born on a canal boat perhaps?

Have you found the mother in the 1851 census?
-
There are quite a lot of families living in Canal Side but I don't see it on the map
Try 1851 census
Joseph Pierce, aged 38, HO107/1719/151/20 before and after this ref.

It's close to Queens Square and Oxford Road
-
Nearest that I can find on a modern map is
https://goo.gl/maps/c16geFwiEzMonJh96
It could be the water course named The Dyke which runs into the river.

In the 1861 census the road where Joseph Pierce lived is just "Canal", with house numbers.
-
I think it must be the Dyke, Shaun. It was certainly on the old maps when I looked yesterday.
-
I have found the area from the census in 1851 when Ann (Robert's mother) was living with her parents but there is now no water anywhere near there.

I wonder if it went further into Wycombe in 1851/1861 ? That could well be it if so. I can imagine that any extension would have been filled in recently to facilitate road building.
-
I wondered if it was some of the properties to the east of Laura Place and to the south of Queens Square which are unnamed and adjoining the water?? https://maps.nls.uk/view/104183447#zoom=6&lat=7886&lon=12959&layers=BT Although the map is 1897 :-\

Thank you very much. I think I can see the canal which is now not there. There is a long row of houses on one side very close to Oxford Road.
-
This is an earlier map which I think shows the water more clearly - but even fewer streets are named!!

There might be something here:

Thank you both. I might have to but the "Silt Road" and read it. I am fairly convinced, from the older map, that I have found Canal Side and the Courts and Yards may be forever lost in the mists of time, I am afraid. One of the comments regarding the Silt Road was " I remember back in the 60′s when they covered the river up down the Oxford Road." That seems to be when it was lost.

Thank you. I have done so.

Thank you very much. That is such interesting reading. It helps me imagine the area much better.

It did indeed run along what is now called Frogmoor, a road that leads northwards from the Oxford Rd in the town centre to Hughenden. The proof can be found by comparing the names of those listed alongside the "Canal" in the 1851 census, with the 1849 High Wycombe Tithe Map and Apportionments.
The canal would have been formed from the "Hughenden Stream", which still exists, but disappears into a culvert by Morrisons supermarket. It re-emerges opposite the Wycombe Swan theatre, having joined up in the culvert with the River Wye. The river then flows eastwards to Bourne End, where it empties into the River Thames.
