I am trying to see the source record for Alfred William Ward's pension naming his wife and children (children and wife now deceased).
I can see the indexed info through Ancestry but cannot get past the Fold3 screen.
The reference I am getting is 184/0970/WAR-WAR. He was killed at Arras on 23 Jul 1916.
Can anyone help me untangle this please?

Unfortunately you won't be able to access records on Fold3 unless you take out a subscription.

His wife was Rose?

Yes his wife is Rose, Rose Ward, but the Pension records shows the two young children correctly, but shows Rose as Rose Johnson.
So I am trying to see the original in case it is mis-transcribed, since I cannot find a marriage for the widow Rose to a Mr Johnson.
Would also to like to see if there is any address given, and the date of the record.

I do have a full Worldwide Sub for Ancestry, which I hoped would include this access. ???

Fold3 is a separate thing. They do sometimes have free access

Not mistranscribed. PM me your email?

Thanks to a kind Rootschat-er, who has shared the info from Fold3.
Much appreciated.

Alfred William Ward married a Rose Crutchfield in the September quarter of 1907 in the Marylebone district. They had two children, Alfred Norman Francis (born 12.3.09) and Olive May (born 21.2.10).
The 1911 census records that son Alfred Norman Francis was staying with his uncle William Francis and his family. No trace found for Olive May. Parents Alfred William and Rose were living in the household of Fred Williams and his family at 161 Dynevor Road, Stoke Newington, London. He is working as a milk carrier. His entry shows that he and Rose have been married for 3 full years and that they had 2 children, both living.
Rose remarried in 1918 to a Peter N Faust, the marriage took place in the High Wycombe district. Peter Faust died in 1920. She remarried again in 1922 to a Richard Thomas Johnson, the marriage took place in the Hendon district of London. The 1939 register shows Rose living at 49 London Road, High Wycombe. The pension card gave Rose's address as 49 Totteridge Road, High Wycombe -- Totteridge Road is just around the corner to London Road. The pension card gives Rose's date of birth as 5.9.1885 and the date of birth shown on the 1939 register for Rose Johnson is also 5.9.1885
I think this gives you your answer.

Yes, you are right about all that, (Olive is also with family in 1911) but....
I wondered about the content of the Pension Form for Rose and her two children.
It says the application was received on 19-5-1916, and in the same handwriting it gives Rose's name as Rose Johnson, and a note 'Widow not eligible - 15-9-17'.
On both of these dates she was still Rose Ward, not marrying Peter Faust till 1918, nor Richard Johnson till 1922.
So I could not work out why she would have been refused a widow's pension, and how the name Rose Johnson had gone on the Form.
I am also intrigued by the red writing "See Alternative Pensions Cabinet 26-7-18" - this could be the date of the Marriage to Peter Faust, (Sep qtr 1918).
I wonder what the Alternative Cabinet is...
A bit baffled, Pam

Hi Pam,
You have a copy of the pension card, can I ask you, what colour is the card?

Apologies for butting into the thread, but I have been helping another Rootschatter to build bios of soldiers who lost their lives in WW1 and would be really interested to know if the card colour was significant in some way.

Hi Boo,
I noticed that the cards for a widow's pension were a different colour (pinky) whereas the 'normal' pension cards were a creamy colour.

Thanks Allan, will look out for that next time I look at them.
