Jim's original post asked if you'd found the couple in earlier records, so I think his edited post is just a reference to my post with records for the couple, nothing more.

I've had a quick look in the newspapers to see if there's any mention of their deaths and couldn't find anything.

However, there are a numerous references to George, in his business and social dealings. Below are a few that reference his residence & farm, matching other records.

Did George HL Dakin and Louisa have any children? or where were they married?

George and Louisa married in 1905, and appear to have had at least one child, Minnie Eliza (1908), and possibly a second, Dorothy Ann (1913).

George appears to have re-married in 1942 to Margaret Furness, and Margaret died in 1963. They may have had 2 children, one of which died young.

Minnie Eliza appears to have married William Critchlow in 1942, and Minnie died in 1977.

Louisa, George, Margaret and Minnie are all buried in Taddington.

A few follow-up questions (via PM) from japeflakes. I'm not sure I can answer them all definitively so anyone else's input is welcome.

I'll include various records for George, and his family, just to provide some context and confirmation that we have the right George.

Q1) Source says George was landlord of Old Hall Pub, Hope, Derbyshire, from 1911-1918
George and wife Louisa were at the Hall on the 1911 census and there's also a newspaper item (see below) in 1919 naming him as proprietor. There may well be other records about, such as electoral registers and directories, that can put a more precise timeline on when George was in charge of the Hall.

Q2) Someone says he was in the Royal Engineers
I couldn't locate any obvious service record for George but I may have overlooked it. Or it could be that others have confused service records of other George Dakins (there are quite a few) with your George.

Q3) Someone says there is a GHL Dakin on the War Memorial in Hope
The GHL Dakin recorded on the memorial doesn't appear to be one of those who died in the wars. The names of dead are recorded on the front face of the memorial and the name GHL Dakin is on the side. My knowledge of war memorials is limited but I believe the costs were typically raised amongst the local community. I suspect the names on the sides of the memorial are those that made a significant contribution. Sometimes this is noted in newspaper items but I couldn't find anything for this memorial.

It does seem slightly odd that the names of contributors (may) have been recorded on the memorial and it's not something I've come across before, so I could be wrong. Maybe other RootsChatters with more knowledge can offer some opinion.

- to start work at Lundhill Colliery, when pit re-opened in 1857
- remained at colliery for many years as a deputy
- also worked at Houghton Main Colliery, walking 3 miles each way until aged 80
- Mr Dakin recalled, as a boy, walking to stores in Wombwell to buy groceries for family of eleven
- brother of the the late George Dakin
- both brothers had shops in Wombwell for many years
- William's at the bottom of Cemetery Road
- George's opposite ____? of Church Street
- both brothers interested in musical lines
- brothers known locally as "Big Dakins" and "Little Dakins" to distinguish them
- William a pious man and found home among the "Quakers"
- ten years ago he went to live with daughter Mrs J Kenyon, of Brierly
- the only family member now left in Wombwell are his 2 nieces:
- Mrs Pepper, of 1 Victoria Road
- Mrs F Taylor, of 8 Copeland Road
- funeral at Wombwell cemetery on Monday

Notes:
- Mrs J Kenyon is likely William's daughter Hetty (1881-1964) who married Joseph Henry Kenyon in 1903.
- Mrs Pepper is likely George's daughter Amelia (1880-1971) who married William Pepper in 1909.
- Mrs F Taylor is likely George's daughter Martha Augusta (1874-?) who married Frank Taylor in 1912.

Grandparents: William Dakin & Martha (?)

I'm including a few details of (likely) grandfather William, as they help confirm the brothers George and William.

It looks like Martha died between 1841 and 1851 and William re-married.

War Memorial Hope - Hope - TracesOfWar.com
https://www.tracesofwar.com/sights/16241/War-Memorial-Hope.htm

I think I've done a disservice to George here.

Looking again the the war memorial is does explicitly state it's a 'mark of gratitude to the men who served'. I still can't find a service record for George so I changed tack and see if I could find confirmation that any of the people named on the sides of the memorial had served but weren't killed.

Under the list of those killed in WW1, from Thornhill, is a P Froggatt. And, on the side, under the Thornhill is listed a J B Froggatt. I think these were brothers Percival (Percy) and John Beresford, sons of John Beresford Froggatt (1854-1893) and Hannah Darwent (1857-1938).

John Beresford Froggatt's (jun) service record exists, confirming his service.

Belper News
02 Mar 1917
Bamford Soldier Killed
- Private Percival (Percy) Froggatt
- aged 24 years
- youngest son of the late John Berrisford Froggatt
- and Mrs Froggatt, of Thornhill, near Bamford and Hope
- grandson of the late John Bocking Darwent, well known local preacher
- Percy enlisted 4th Feb 1916, in the Sherwood Foresters
- sent out to France in September
- died 9th Feb

So it does seem to be that those named on the war memorial are those that served, so ignore my previous speculations on why George's name is on the memorial.

It might be worth starting new thread in the Armed Forces forum, to see if anyone there can dig up any records re. George's medal, or at least point you in the right direction.

The other option may be trying to contact a local history group for Hope, and the surrounding areas, as sometimes these groups have already researched local WWI servicemen.
