Was she MRS Archibald? With a son Jxxx age 6? (Modified, I realised he could still be alive)
If so
Last address 7 Tweed Avenue, Peebles, Scotland.
Left Southampton 16 August 1950
Ship = New Australia
Passenger list is on Ancestry. Indexed as Mrs Robins S Archibald

Thank you very much
Yes that sounds correct with son John, age 6 years old...
This one piece of information has opened up a new query, please
Could there be anyone who could shed any light on the name or background of John Archibald's father?
He was thought to be from Polish descent.
I will be very glad indeed of any help.

Is his birth certificate blank in that regard?
-
I cannot as yet find evidence of birth but have looked
Would the father's name automatically be on any document in these days in Scotland ?
What about if name unknown?
Thank you very much for any help...
I am constantly amazed at the perseverance of roots chat people.
It all helps to sort out fact from fiction!

To rule out Ruby as per pm

I don’t know if a father would be mentioned or not on a birth cert . Presumably not if indexed under Archibald, on the other hand it’s Scotland so there might be some hint.
Did he marry in Australia? Did he give any name there?
-
When John, the son, marries in Victoria, what details does the certificate record for his origins?
Robina Scott ARCHIBALD died, 1975, in Victoria....with another surname........and her death notice names her as mother of John...and a named daughter?
I am avoiding naming people who might be alive.

The father's name can only be on the birth certificate if he accompanied the mother to the Registrar's when she went to register the birth, and signed the certificate at that time.
His name could only be added later if a court instructed the Registrar to do so, in which case there would be an entry in the Register of Corrected Entries (RCE).
What about if name unknown?
There would be a blank space.

Thank you both
Forfarian and Ladyhawk for sending answers to this quest.
The family in Victoria is keen to understand the Scottish beginning of the family.
This has helped.
There are still unanswered questions which with correct research can be hopefully discovered.

Hi, do you know whether Robina's son was born in Peebles too?
I looked on scotlandspeople and couldn't find a likely birth record in Peebles for her son. It might not have been under the surname Archibald though
However, there is a record for Robina Scott Archibald's in 1923 in Earlston.
There is also a probate for a Robina Scott Archibald, wife of a John Archibald in 1936 in Earlston on ancestry.co.uk who could possibly be a relative. (I don't know how much information you have)
-
Thank you to annie1515,
There could be great possibility that son John was born in Peebles before heading South for the voyage to Australia.
Robina Scott Archibald's parents were
John Archibald born 1893 and Mary Redpath Richardson Hope born 1900, death 1983.

I can't find a John registered in Peebles
If he had no middle names and was born under the surname Archibald, and was around 6 when he left in 1950?
Under just 'John' there are registrations on scotlandspeople:
1943 Dalziel (near Motherwell I think, 37 miles away)
1944 Port Glasgow (72 miles away)
1944 Kilmarnock (71 miles away)
1946 Bonnybridge (52 miles away)
(mileage from google maps.)
She could have had her son somewhere else other than Peebles? Equally it may not have been under the surname Archibald either.
Do you have an exact birth date for John at all so if you were to look at Scottish records it would help to narrow it down/search for a birth record.

If she was unmarried he would have been indexed as Archibald even if he was also registered by some other name.
-
It seems on further investigation that the boy John was born in England not Scotland and came to Australia before the 1950's.
-
This has led on to further research with the father of John.
Polish tank records are being investigated and hopefully a clue will emerge.
THANK YOU to all who have contributed to this on going history..
