Title: Thomas Guy Birth record
Post by: swissancestor on Monday 17 August 20 00:30 BST (UK)
I have been trying to find the birth record of my Great Grandfather Thomas Guy and have had no luck on the GRO lookup, FreeBDM or Ancestry / Find my past. He is shown on the census records from 1871 to 1911 as being born in Bedlington in 1870. His parents were William Guy and I believe Mary Anne Winley. He lived most of his life in Seaton Delaval and worked as a tailor. His sister was born in Druridge and his brothers in Seaton Delaval.

I suspect this could be your man:

Thomas Winlay born 1869 Sept Qtr Morpeth 10b 296 (Bedlington was in Morpeth RD at this date)

The Dove index on the GRO website shows this to have been an illegitimate birth as the mother's maiden name is blank.  Interestingly, the subsequent births of Thomas's siblings Margaret, Robert, George and Joseph are recorded as 'Guy' with maiden name = Winlay/Winlow.  I can't see a Guy/Winlay marriage though between these events.

It seems that Thomas was born just before they married.

WINLAY, THOMAS
No mother's maiden surname
GRO Reference: 1869  S Quarter in MORPETH  Volume 10B  Page 296

Marriages Sep 1869
WINLAY,    Mary
GUY, William
Alnwick
10b   446

FreeBMD have Mary's page number as 416 and I have submitted a correction.

Thanks Debra ... not sure how I missed that marriage entry.  FamilySearch shows that it took place on 18th September 1869 at Felton.

Thanks all, i seem to have found a few ancestors born outside marriage. it was obviously less unusual than i thought. Felton would be correct for the marriage as the family had settled there before Delaval. Can't believe that i missed the obvious but thanks again.

Have the birth certificate showing the birth at Meadowdale in Bedlington in July 1869.
Thanks for the help with this.
