Title: Stanners
Post by: CanScot on Wednesday 09 September 20 16:51 BST (UK)
My paternal great grandmother was Helen Fraser b1886 in Edinburgh. She was illegitimate with only her mother, Janet Fraser, listed on the birth certificate. Her mother married in 1886 (Hugh Mackintosh) and she (Helen) is identified as Helen Fraser Mackintosh on the 1901 census, Helen F.S Mackintosh in 1902 when she marries Daniel Sinclair and Helen Fraser on her death certificate in 1956. Sounds all very straightforward.
However, on her son's death certificate she is identified as Nellie Sinclair (maiden name Stanners). I found a Helen F Stanners (b1886 Midlothian) on the 1891 census for Bridgeness, Carriden. She is listed as the adopted daughter of James and Betsy Stanners.
So, my question is (and I may be completely wrong) could Helen's biological father be a Stanners? If not then why would she be adopted in 1891 and then be living with her mother in 1901? Any advice would be welcome.

On Scotlands People, her death record in 1956, Dalmeny & Queensferry, has Helen Fraser Sinclair & Helen Fraser McInrosh.

Did you find Janet & Hugh on 1891 census?

Added
Janet is Jessie on 1891 census, Queensferry & there is a Nelly Mackintosh but her age is given as 16
Hugh is 47.

There was no legal adoption back then - just private arrangements made between the various parties

If you track the Stanners back through the censuses they only had 2 sons - Walter b about 1856 and Alexander 1867

Walter married Jemima Hamilton in 1891

Did the other siblings of David Thompson also give MMN as Stanners?

Do you mean David Thomson Sinclair?   It reads as though his surname was Thomson

After checking with SP, all the other siblings had Mackintosh as MMN on their death certs

There were 2 David Thomson Sinclair's born in 1907. 1 in Queensferry & 1 in Bo'ness

The David Thomson Sinclair I am interested in died on April 11th 1955 in Little Cairnie. His mother is listed as Nellie Sinclair (Stanners). I know it is the correct person as my Dad signed the certificate. It's one of the many questions that can be unearthed when researching family history!
