Title: Charles Wilfred Wheatley and Florence Cowen
Post by: floggle toggle 2 on Sunday 15 November 20 18:49 GMT (UK)
Charles Wilfred Wheatley and "wife" Florence both appear on the 1939 registrar as -

Charles Wilfred Wheatley, single, born 24.1.1910.
Florence Wheatley, married, born 17.11.1905.

While he is shown as “single”, she is “married”. The only marriage record I have found is a GRO bmd Q3 1970 for Charles Wilfred Wheatley and Florence Cowen.

Could it be they were "living in sin", Florence did not want to admit to this, while Charles did not mind?

No birth for a Florence Cowen in Dec qtr 1905 or March qtr 1906

Redacted entry so presumably had a child - any details known?

The 1970 marriage has her as Florence Wheatley

The only clue is a Ancestry tree which says Florence Rolls born 17 Nov 1903 died Abt 1988 married Lawrence Cowen in Brighton 1925 and then Charles Wilfred Wheatley in 1970, but gives no sources.

For the Sep 1970 marriage in Eastbourne, the GRO have indexed Florence as both Wheatley and Cowen, they are both also indexed as Weatley!
But it suggests Florence was using the Wheatley name before the marriage.

The March 1937 Cowen, mother Rolls, birth in Brighton is also indexed as Wheatley, mother Rolls. The Wheatley entry is printed in the index, with some doubt about the page number I think.
There also seems to have been a re-registration of the birth in Sep 1970, same time as the marriage.

Death reg of Florence makes her two years older than on the 1939 Register.

There is a Lawrence Cowen living in Brighton, born London, with his grandparents in 1911, age 7.  Grandparents from Warsaw, Lewis, a tailor, and Sara.  Grandparents' marriage says only one living child remaining.  Grandparents are in Derbyshire in 1901.

Not clear birth under 'Lawrence Cowen'

Trying to find death just before 1970.

Lewis Cowen, tailor in 1918, is operating from 29 and 30 Sillwood Street Brighton.

Louis Cowen, 29 Sillwood Street, admin. to Sarah, widow,  and Samuel Cowen, tailor, 1925.  Death in Paddington, probably.

There is a birth for a Laurence Desmond Cowen in Marylebone in Sep. quarter 1903 mmn Rowe.

There is a marriage for a Samuel Cowen to Elsie Rowe in Marylebone in 1902.
