Title: Census Records
Post by: gaelboyes on Saturday 27 August 05 08:38 BST (UK)
My GGrandmother was born in Birmingham and lived all her life there but the first time she appears in a census is in 1901, age 48. How can that be? Her name was Ann Searle, born in 1853. She later married Herbert Noake and I have only found him once, in the 1881 census.

Hi

Do you know anything more about your g grandmother?  Can you post her 1901 details - was she married by then?  did she come from a particular part of Brimingham?

The more you can tell us, the easier it will be (!) to help.

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

I can see an Ann Searle b. Birmingham of about the right age in 1861 and 1871, father James (silver polisher/finisher).
Isn't she the right one?

In 1891, there is Annie Noake, b. 1853 Birmingham, married ro a Herbert, Teacher of Music. They are in Handsworth Staffs. Any good? (Obviously same as the Annie Noake widow in 1901 - there is a son Sidney)

Thanks to all who replied to my query. Here`s what I know. Ann Searle`s father was James. She lived in Soho Rd. Handsworth in 1883 when she was married. Where did she live in the 1881 census. But who was her mother-Martha or Matilda. I took a gamble and purchased a birth certificate with the mother listed as Matilda. The reason being it was the only Ann Searle birth entry for 1853. Still have not proved for certain it is the right one. Annie Noake was found in the 1901 census with Sydney and Elsie Laura. Can anyone tell me their address at that time. Being in Oz makes it difficult to access some records.

If James' wife in 1861 - with Annie already born - was Matilda, then it seems she's a more likely match than a wife on a later census, don't you think so?
What does it state regarding James' occupation on both certs? Does the silver finisher match?

It seems there are two James Searles. One married Matilda Halfpenny in 1849 in Birmingham and the other married Martha Loveland in 1850 in Surrey. On Annie`s marriage certificate her father was listed as a jeweller, on her birth certificate it is hard to read but looks like electus plater

Thanks Rio in the City, hopefully that will help when I receive the death certificate for an Annie Noake who died in Birmingham in 1907, unless she shifted again. They list a husbands name on a woman`s death certificate don`t they? Are you sure about Sydney`s birth date as I thought he was born in 1879.

It must have been a mistake about Sydneys birth year. In 1891 it's 1879.
Whoever the informant is on the death cert will be named. Hopefully in your case Annie.

I think Matilda and Martha could be the same person.

Thanks Rio, have made notes re the info. Both Martha and Matilda existed I feel as there were two entries in the I.G.I. at familysearch.org. It seems families moved quite a bit. I still can`t find Annie Searle in the 1881 census although she may have been living under another name as it appears she may have been a single mother.
