Title: Marriage between Samuel NEWINGTON & Margery *COMPLETED*
Post by: Westy11 on Thursday 19 November 20 07:27 GMT (UK)
Samuel NEWINGTON & Margery of Hawkhurst, Kent had issue including the earliest I could locate:
Joseph bap 2 May 1641
John bap 18 Sep 1642
etc

A pedigree I located included the same children's names as I located and the same location.  As it related to Samuel's spouse her name was given as ...... CARPENTER.  It would be easy to just add Margery's name as the forename of unknown CARPENTER however I am hoping someone with better skills that I can find the marriage.

Additionally any ideas where Wills for those from Kent can be located?

Have you tried TNA for wills, some are free at the moment if you are registered

https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/wills-1384-1858/
These records are Prerogative Court of Canterbury (PCC) wills in series PROB 11 made between 1384 and 12 January 1858.

This tree on Wikitree

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Newington-6

gives the source "Margery's surname was recorded as Carpenter in the Pedigrees of the Families in the County of Sussex.[3]"

https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=njp.32101007240102&view=1up&seq=9

It's on page 159.

Many thanks Rosie99 & bearkat,

The Pedigree is the one I have found and unfortunately there was no will for Samuel on TNA.

When & where did Samuel die?

I have not located his death however the Pedigree noted he died 1662.

I looked through all the Wills for a Samuel NEWINGTON available on TNA and none really fit hence wondering if there was another site where Wills for Kent may be held.

I think the burial register for Hawkhurst is another example of poor record keeping - sorry  ::)

There are entries for the year 1642

Then a note saying:  The paper register contains entries of burials for all the years here omitted except 1644 1651 . 1652

I wonder if that should read 1651 to 1662 as the register recommences in January 1662.

There is no burial listed for Samuel Newington in 1662.

Kent Baptisms on findmypast does have a Margery Carpenter in 1621, Hawkhurst, St Laurence with All Saints, father John.
Actually indexed twice, and also another indexing for 1622. Seem to have everything x 3.
Need to see what it says :)

Thank you once again Bearkat and thank you Johnw65 for your contributions.

Much appreciated.

I will close the post now based on the posts to date I don't think there is a marriage record available unfortunately .

It's worth remembering that this was the Commonwealth Period.

https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Church_of_England_Parish_Registers

It would be worth looking to see if any Bishops Transcripts have survived.

The Calendar of Assize Records: Kent Indictments has Samuel Newington and others, yeomen of Hawkhurst,  charged with recusancy in 1641.

I've just checked the marriage register.

There is nothing between 1641 and 1662.

Hello again Bearkat,

That's very interesting - I had not heard of the term ' charged with recusancy..' before and makes for very interesting reading.

Where did you locate the record for this charge please.

Many thanks.

I found it by searching Google books - it's under the 'more' tab.  You can find all sorts of gems hiding there.

Does Westy think that it says John Carpenter's daughter is Newington? If that is Samuel's wife then the missing marriage record is less of a problem.

It is not unusual to see gaps in parish registers during the civil war and commonwealth period. No BTs either. FamilySearch report none for Hawkhurst between 1641/2 and 1661/2.

Hi Jonw65,

I have had a look at John CARPENTER's Will and he calls his daughter Margery NEWINGTON.

I think the will confirms the marriage, which along with their deaths (I can't see a remarriage for Margery Newington) must have all happened between 1642 & 1662.

There few MIs on the Kent Archaelogical Society website for Hawkhurst but none for the Newingtons.

I think so as well.  I cannot find anything online including Family search other than baptisms for the children.  I located John CARPENTER's marriage and with your help I located other material including Margery's baptism.

Maybe when we all live in a post COVID world I can attend the Kent Archives and see what else I can locate.

Thanks everyone for your contributions.
