Title: Fallon/Finnerty Marriage 1882
Post by: wwinoz on Tuesday 24 November 20 07:19 GMT (UK)
I have ancestors John Fallon/Fallen who married Bridget Finnerty in Castlebar 1882. They were both born in Mayo, John C1856, Bridget C1860. Their first 3 children Michael, Catherine and Mary were born in Mayo and then they moved to Halifax in West Yorkshire where they had a further 6 children; Alice, Mary Ann, Sarah, Beatrice, Sarah Ellen and Annie Elizabeth.

Alice is my grandmother and any help with these families from the Mayo side would be fabulous as I have hit a brick wall.

Where is your brick wall? It would help if you said what information you have which is evidenced. For example, here is the marriage of John and Bridget which you perhaps have already as you have the date.
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1882/10960/8006273.pdf

You can look the children’s births up on that site
https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/

Note the different spelling of Finnerty on the marriage certificate signature -
‘Fenaughty’.

Griffiths Valuation can be helpful. This site shows detail and explanation.

http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

This is a quick reference and you can see that in Massbrook (the townland on the m c ) , there is a Michael Fallon and a Michael Fenaghty. (Fathers names on m VJ.

Fallon is in Massbrook Lower which may equate with ‘Bottom’ on the m.c. Perhaps.

There is a possible death here for Michael Fallon of Massbrook

The Catholic parish is Addergoole. If you have access to Ancestry or FindMyPast, entries are indexed. Otherwise you have to trawl through the records.

Here is a baptism for Bridget, with father Michael. November 14th 1858.

I hope these are your family.  :)

Thanks you so much heywood. This has all been very helpful and will keep me busy for a while. My brickwall was the fact that I didn't have a marriage  cert but obtained the info from one of the ancestry sites as a family match. Now I know the spellings are different it will have a difference. Grateful for your help.

You are in luck, a transcript of the church record of the 1882 marriage in Addergoole RC parish identifies both parents for bride and groom:
- Bridget Finnerty, daughter of Michael Finnerty and Maria McNamara;
- John Fallon, son of Michael Fallon and Catherine Browne.

According to an Addergoole RC parish church record transcript, Bridget had the following brother Andrew (ie. both parents recorded in the church marriage record as Michael Finnerty and Maria McNamara), here is the civil record:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1883/10936/5996283.pdf

Andrew was baptised on 15 March 1846, the sponsors were Pat and Sarah McNamara, the address was Terry (left page):

Andrew Michl Fenaghty Mary McNamara Pat McNamara Sarah McNamara Terry

Terry might be Terryduff or Terrybaun:

Possible marriage for Thomas in 1868 to an Anne Bourke? (just to note for now, until it can be ruled in/out):

And a sister of Bridget was Mary who was baptised on 19 March 1849, the sponsors were Pat McNamara and Mary McNamara, again the address was Terry (left page):
https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000634595#page/61/mode/1up
Mary Michl Fenaghty Mary McNamara Pat McNamara Mary McNamara Terry

Possible marriage for Mary in 1870 to a Thomas Hopkins? (just to note for now, until it can be ruled in/out):

The tithe applotment books listed a townland named Terry, which was split into a subdenomination of Terryduff and a subdenomination of 'Terrybane', a Richard and Edmund Finaghty were mentioned, also a Thomas Browne, a Patt McNamara, and a James Browne, but no Fallons:

This looks like Thomas and Anne in 1901 at Massbrook Lower:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Mayo/Addergoole/Massbrook_Lower/1585818/

Birth of the daughter Anne (above census return) in 1875:

Birth of the son James (above census return) in 1880:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1880/02848/2043566.pdf

I can also see a son John b. 1869, a daughter Mary b. 1871, a son Thomas b. 1873, a daughter Bridget b. 1877, a son Michael b. 1879, and a daughter Elizabeth b. 1884.

Thomas and Anne in 1911:
