Title: What was Elizabeth's maiden name?
Post by: Tsu on Sunday 13 December 20 14:51 GMT (UK)
Here's a snip from a marriage certificate.  Adam Macdonald married Lilias Turnbull in 1918.
What was Adam's mother's maiden name?  It looks like Tyne but I'm not 100% sure.

Thanks!

Thank you everyone.

Is there a way to search Scotlands People for births by mother's maiden name and surname?

If you mean Adam's birth record, that is the one that I've put up.

add - Family search includes it in their search.

No, I'm trying to find out whether Adam MacDonald and Lilias Maud Turnbull had any other children apart from their daughter Helen born 1921. Lilias died shortly after the birth of Helen in 1921.  They married in 1918.

You can't with births. You can with  deaths after 1974.  Where they living in Newington?

Meadowbank, I believe. The address on Helen's birth certificate is 14 Meadowbank Terrace.

I think that would be Newington (that's where Helen was registered),

There are 30 birth entries for M*cdonald 1918-1921 in Newington. It might be work you bringing them up as you might recognize family names - e.g. Helen is recorded as Helen Edington Mcdonald. You don''t have to use credits for just a preliminary search

Thanks Gadget.  There's no mention of Edington on her birth certificate that I received in the post this week.  Just plain Helen.  Father Adam - Hairdresser, Mother Lilias MacDonald nee Turnbull.

two Helens  - George Square and Canongate. What district does it give on the cert?

PS I don't think it would be George Square

Canongate.
Title: Re: What was Elizabeth's maiden name?

There's only a small window available for children.  They were married in March 1918 and Helen was born June 23 1921.  Lilias died at the beginning of July 1921.  Assuming a nine month pregnancy, any childrn would have had to be born between December 1918 and September 1920 (more likely June or July 1920).

I've just checked with 1918-1920, Canongate and there are 42 entries. Are there any family names that they might have used - e.g. was Helen a family name?

I've looked in the British Newspapers collection for an obit taht might give details of the family but it's not too good with Scottish newspapers.

I don't think so.  I'm new to this tree and as far as I can tell, Adam is the only name that I've seen more than once.  Adam's grandfather was also Adam and Helen's son has Adam as a middle name.  I can't see any Adam's listed.

My Edinburgh geography isn't great either.  I tried looking for Adam MacDonald's in the voter lists for the 1940s and 50s when any children would be adults but my geography is letting me down.

Helen came to England as a teenager and the person I'm doing the tree for can't tell me anything except Helen's name and date and place of birth.

There might be something in the 1921. I'm not sure when it will come out in Scotland though. Also, it might be worth finding out who informed on Adam's death cert.
Title: Re: What was Elizabeth's maiden name?
Post by: Tsu on Sunday 13 December 20 18:35 GMT (UK)
Adam died in 1942 having married again in the meantime.  Helen was the informant.  He was still living at Meadowbank Terrace.  His second wife had also died, I'm not sure when but she was 15 years younger than him so there might have been children.

I can see me using a lot of credits on this one. ;D

Thanks for all the great assistance so far.

What I now know for certain.

Adam MacDonald married Elizabeth Glendinning in Edinburgh in 1903.  IN 1912 they separated and in 1918 they divorced.

A few weeks later, he married Lilias Turnbull in Edinburgh. In 1921 they had a daughter Helen.
In 1921 Lilias died.

In 1922 Adam married (Evelyn) Doris Murton.  In 1934 Doris died.

In 1942 Adam died.

Short of buying a look at every birth in the pertinent years, what's the best ay to find any other births of Adam MacDonald and his wives?

All suggestions gratefully received.

I'm not sure what records are available for Scottish divorces but you could see if there are any and any maintenance orders. Possibly here

https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/research/catalogues-and-indexes

Others may have better info on divorce info in Scotland.

Have you looked at the 1911 for them.

Who was the informant on Adam's death cert and was there a will?

I found the reporting of the divorce in the newspaper archive on Find My Past.  There was also an addition information note on the marriage on Scotland's People.

I think I found Adam and Elizabeth in 1911.  He's listed as a Dancing Teacher but that was Elizabeth's father's occupation so I suppose it's possible that he was doing it.  The address is Regent Street Edinburgh.  It's not the address given on the divorce papers though so it might not be them.

The informant on Adam's death certificate was Helen.  How would I find a will if there was one?

You could also check if there are any obituaries for Adam.  I'm not sure of the local Edinburgh newspaper at the time.
Nothing in the British Newspaper archive

Wills registered after 1925

Wills registered between 1925 and 1997 have not been digitised and may only be consulted in the Historical Search Room at the National Records of Scotland. The printed Calendar of Confirmations is the yearly index to these wills. See the National Records of Scotland's guide on wills and testaments for further information.

Wills dating from 1997 have not yet been transferred to the National Records of Scotland. For further information you should contact the Commissary Department, Edinburgh Sheriff Court, 27 Chambers Street, Edinburgh EH1 1LB.

Tsu - It will be closed at the moment because of Covid restrictions. You could do a death search on SP with the other wives' surnames and a broad birthdate (covering the period when they were married)  , as I did with  Turnbull.

Just to say that he can be found in the electoral rolls but you need to search under the name Macdonald. I found that searching by putting 14 A Meadowbank Terrace in the keyword box it seemed to bring all the registers up. ( Leave the year blank). I cannot see any for Macdonald at that address after 1940 - I think any children would be too young for the registers.

The rolls show Meadowbank Terrace to be in Canongate Ward. It is in the Abbeyhill area of the city and actually not that far from Holyrood.

It's the children that Tsu is looking for. He died in 1942.  She has his death cert and all the marriage info.

That was about the registration of possible children. The Meadowbank address was in Canongate. He seemed to have remained there.

As you are familiar with Edinburgh, being born and bred there, would you know which 'local' newspapers would be the best ones to look at for obituaries in 1942?

The Edinburgh Papers are " The Scotsman" and " Edinburgh Evening News". I could not see anything for him but would make two observations. The first is that a surname like MacDonald can be awkward in searching the archive as you have to also consider McDonalds and M'Donalds ( I also noticed that with the electoral rolls the reader has the surname at times as Donald !). The second is that it is sometimes necessary to search around specific dates - from my own experience I was only able to find my parents wedding and my older sisters' birth notices in " The Scotsman" by doing this as searching by surname produced nothing.

Ancestry have online the Calendar of Confirmations and Inventories, 1876-1936. Cut off just a few years too early isn't it!

Would require a check in person therefore.

Very helpful information, Monica. I was hoping that you might come on   :)

Tsu, if your friend is trying to find any more descendants of Adam, it might be worthwhile her doing  DNA test to see if there are any matches out there that are possible descendants.
