Title: Diary > Friday 22nd January
Post by: Roobarb on Saturday 23 January 21 10:24 GMT (UK)
Well no-one seems to be here first, let's hope we don't clash this morning!

My day on Friday:

Another sunny day, a welcome change from the rain. Went for a walk in the morning, still limited to the walkways and streets as the field is like a quagmire and the path into the woods is thick with mud. Another cold day but good to have a walk.

Did a couple of things on the computer and read my book, I was keen to get it finished as I didn't really like it, thought it would be good when I started it but I gradually went off it. I was too far through to leave it unfinished. Got everything ready for art class and had some lunch. There were only three of us in the afternoon class this week, my friend had had to join in the morning class. After some discussion about the drawing and the colours I could use I made a few small alterations then painted the sky. Was very careful with it, it's so easy to make a mess of it in watercolour. The video link cut out several times during the class, the teacher's husband and children also need to use the broadband so it puts a lot of pressure on the connection. She soon had it up and running again each time. I'd enjoyed the class, my kitchen looked like a bomb had hit it, had to have a cup of tea before tidying it.

Had some of the prepared chicken breast for tea, ginger and lime which I thought I'd enjoy but it was so heavy on the garlic that I wasn't keen. I only bought it because the plain chicken breasts weren't available, I hope people have since acquired some commonsense and stopped the ridiculous panic buying. I was left with a strong aftertaste, had to have a glass of wine to get rid of it.  :) ;D

A winter wonderland this morning, thick snow, but not the really substantial stuff, but looked beautiful.
Phoned my next door neighbour and invited her to a snowball fight, but she was not up for it!
Did out the sink unit, not long since I did it so unless the teaspoon fairy has enlarged her area can’t thing what has happened .
Washed the bathroom mats etc, was going to hang them outside but thought if they freeze they will drip when I have to bring them in.
Had no bleach in the bathroom but had put it in the sink unit by mistake, so having found that bleached the bathroom.

Nothing much today , sent a PM to someone who has not posted for a while so hope to hear all is well with them.

Got latest on the horse, I was mistaken ,he is not yet at  the Vet’s
because he was exhausted and  it is hard work for a horse to balance in a horse box on winding lanes, so on a very strong painkiller ,and when not so tired will go for scans etc.

Got a letter from the Eye Specialist , dated Dec 3 rd.——,
Telling me he had sent a letter to myGP re the prescriptions I was prescribed, saying they must be on my repeat prescriptions .
I have such battles getting them and can’t stop them ,so every month a
battle with the GP’s receptionist.
He is lovely so kind.

Well a cuppa calls and I have washed up sbd done the oven ,found out I can have the light on if I put it on fan but no heat, I can see what I am doing.

Cheerio folks, hope everyone is well .
Viktoria.

Hi Roobarb,
A dog drinking wine? ;D  ;D  ;D

Remember Mrs Pumphrey's dog ill (Mrs P played by the late Margaretta Mary Winifred Scott, per Wiki), due to eating too much choc cake?

Hi Viktoria
Post delivery varies.

Take care, Mark

Last two days have been a bit of a blur.  Nothing much going on, surprise!
Finished the TV show on family history featuring Glenn Close and John Waters.  I hate it when they practically spit out the word Loyalist when discussing the American revolution, like they were monsters. Many of them settled in Canada, hence my sensitivity. OH has a Loyalist ancestor who was literally chased across to British territory at Niagara Falls.
Went to the library today to drop off a borrowed DVD, then we took a walk around the block.  More like January now -16C with windchill.  Damp too, makes it more unpleasant.  Areas around here might get a lot of snow today, but not us.  This is snow created by the Great Lakes.
We then stopped at the McDonald’s, drive-through only...desperate to do something outside the house.
Made apple crisp this afternoon, tried a slightly different recipe. I put twice as much lemon in as I was supposed to : ) . Will see how it is!
We were going to play scrabble or cribbage, OH not feeling great, so we have postponed. Doc Martin night, he will have to recover! We are near the end of the series.
Usual work on family history, a new jigsaw, and a new book. Entered my new certificates into my programme and placed paper copies in binders.
Just heard a local teen has died of Covid, very sad.  Was working in a nursing home.

I’m really behind with yesterday.....

Good to read everyone’s posts and Roobarb what have you done to your avatar..... looks like nearly a years lockdown has caused him to gain weight 🤣🤣good job he’s now wearing the face coverings to keep safe but to stop eating!
Glad your art class went ok apart from a few hiccups with the internet...

Well Viktoria I’m exhausted just reading your daily cleaning schedule.... you put us all to shame your house must be gleaming from floor to ceiling!
Hope your daughters horse recovers soon with medicines and loving care...
Good to hear your eye specialist has sorted out your prescriptions.... doctors receptionists can be battle axes at times...

I’ve almost forgotten what I did yesterday....
It started off with a lovely clear sunny day.... makes your hear fill with joy...
After breakfast I’d arranged to go for a walk with a friend... we set off down the village but when we got to the loop road it was flooded so we had to go the other way round... the road was quite slippy as the running water that’s always on the road had obviously frozen over night... my friend had a walking pole very sensible as she’s prone to fall over a feather! Once we walked all the way round and had come to the flooded area from the other end we were able to cut up to a foot path... it was quite slippy but we soon got onto the fields where it was dryer...
just got home in time to receive the meat order we’d been expecting... it all came in a large sealed polystyrene box with dry ice bags...
After lunch I took everything out of the fridge and then gave it a good clean...
I then settled down to an afternoon of family research... I have been going through my maternal grandmothers side of the family and making good progress on a side I’ve not looked at before ...
For dinner we had the fish cakes I’d had with my delivery and they were very good... a decent size packed full of fish and very flavoursome...
Watched usual tv... film on Netflix with Meryl Streep ...
Tired when I went to bed which is why I didn’t post last night!

Caroline

Well ,you would have doubled up laughing just a few minutes ago ——
Was watching the programme about Nureyev , whilst doing a bit more to a jig saw.
Had the board across my knees ,but had sat a long time .
Decided I would put the electric  blanket on so stood up,still holding the big jig saw board.
We if you have seen the Mr Bean episode and I think there was one with Tony  Hancock, where the Dentist  injects his own leg.Well my left leg had gone to sleep, I did not want to drop the almost finished jig saw ,but was heading straight towards a glass cabinet!
My leg  was  useless , but I sort of sat down and just bumped my shoulder on the glass , how it did not break I don’t know.
I had to wait a while until feeling came back.
But I saved the jig saw!
No clips of Nureyev ,pity but some spectacular dancing .
My auntie used to tell me about Vaslav Nijinsky ,renowned for a  spectacular leap  through a window - on stage - in “La Spectre de La Rose.”
It was said he actually paused in mid leap for a few seconds
Impossible really and a four or four or five second clip exists but too short
to really see if he did.
Well I did ballet at school but what I did tonight was not from Swan Lake !
I ought to have  a hot bath ,perhaps not so painful in the morning .
Well goodnight ,I can laugh about it though .
Mr. Bean! AKA  Viktoria.

Mark, if it's not Roobarb drinking the wine I can't imagine where it's disappearing to.  ;) ;D  I'll see if I can put him on a crash diet. I'm afraid I've never heard of Mrs Pumphrey or her dog. The only cake that crosses my threshold is Christmas cake, strangely enough that's been disappearing too.

Diana, I'm afraid I know very little about the American revolution (not much good at British history either!) but it doesn't sound like a fair way to talk about the Loyalists. Hope your OH is feeling better tomorrow and you can resume your Doc Martin watching. I've been watching an episode tonight, they're rerunning the whole lot and despite having seen them all I've started from the beginning again. It's a large black dog that tries to worm its way into his affections in the early ones. Not sure when Buddy comes along.
Such sad news about the young man dying of Covid.

Caroline, glad you enjoyed your walk despite the conditions. Good to make progress with the family history, it's so satisfying to make new discoveries.

Viktoria, you've conjured up a hilarious picture, can just imagine you staggering about the lounge!  ;D  Thank goodness you were okay anyway. I didn't see the Nureyev programme, I love ballet but must admit I don't get the same feeling from it on screen as I do watching a live performance.

Roobarb- my first time around with Doc Martin, we are watching S9, have 4 episodes to go.  Buddy the dog is still there! Am assuming the series will continue.  We watch it through Acorn streaming. We watched Agatha Raisin last night - something to watch when thinking is not necessary :).
Yea, very sad about the young man, how awful for his family. On the news they said only 3 people under 20 have died in Canada from Covid.
The apple crisp turned out very well, I will keep the recipe!

Lots of phone calls today, well three ,Grand daughter, Son and then Grandson and Flash Harry.
I could not believe what Grandson told me, phonics , he said the children are learning all sorts of sounds and whilst they learn eg i   n   g        make the sound ing, they also makes the sound in—— leaving off the g, !!!
As in Modern speech——-?
Oh I give up!
He is home schooling as his partner is still working ,in the Nursery ,open for essential workers.

F.H. Asked where I had placed the bird feeder he bought me for Christmas.

I seem to have been involved in a difference of opinion without doing anything !
Quoted in the middle of an exchange of words I know not why.
I mean  - I would like to know , so I can enjoy it!
But this time blameless. :-\

Musicman has posted weather warnings , none for here that I could see.
Hope everyone is well, and getting your vaccinations.
Cheerio for now.
Viktoria .

Diana, hope you enjoy the rest of the Doc Martin episodes, usually good for a laugh, something we all need these days.

Viktoria, it's amazing what they come up with in schools, there was a long period when it was decided that spelling wasn't important, eventually 'they' realised the error of their ways and reverted to teaching the three Rs. Too late for a whole generation who couldn't spell as a result of their modern thinking.

You're certainly not to blame for the dispute, I think yours was perhaps quoted as an opposite viewpoint although I must admit I was rather losing the direction of the thread myself.

Ooooh, yes, the I,T.A.
Initial Teaching Alphabet, that had a lot to answer for.

Up early today, for me nowadays.
Well 8 O’Clockish.

More tidying of papers, they were and are all in their own folders and in date order but some already shredded ,those a few years old.
However, out of the blue came  a demand from the Belgian Pension Authority for tax returns and proof of income for some years past.
Don’t know if it is to do with Brexit ,but neither my O.H. or I have had to do this before .The pension is based on contributions made whilst we lived in Belgium ,obligatory and in any case a reciprocal agreement was in place between the two countries long before we joined T he Common Market.
Not heard back from them about that yet.
I am reluctant to put all documents needed back in their respective folders if they should be needed again.
Oh —- tomorrow is another day !

More snow here , and very cold.I have washing in and will see re hanging it on the line, they will be white from reflected glare. It will depend if the path is slippy.
In Belgium housewives use frost as a sanitiser of sorts.
Babies ‘nappies washed through, laid out on the grass in the frost then washed again and on the line to be frozen and they were snow white and so soft.
We are used to the old tradition of Monday washday, but there they do a huge wash once a month ,but a young bride has ten sets of sheets when she marries.
We were lucky to have three sets !
They buy in tens, decimal system you see.
I can’t stand washing waiting to be done.
I love hanging out “ pegging out “ hereabouts.

I am having a cold beef butty for my lunch then the rest will be minced for cottage pie or some such thing.

Must add a few things to my Tesco order for Wednesday.

So nice to speak with Flash Harry yesterday.
Tiny little voice ,he is missing his friend  and  told me of an incident where his previous friend would not share the play dough ,” and spoilt it for everyone”.
That was Bartholomew ,who FH ,( because Bartholomew was such a big word
and he could not say it all ) called  something like Bottomly !
Not knowing it was a bit rude!
Well off to do something useful ,so Cheerio.
Viktoria.
Hope you are all well , and not too bored .

Apologies Viktoria, I was forgetting that you would know about the teaching methods of that time and of course the effects of them.

What an interesting tale about the Belgians and their washing, I wouldn't have room to store nine lots of dirty sheets! Be careful if you decide to 'peg out '!

No need for apologies, but Thankyou anyway.

Yes it was a flash the pan thing and many children coped and some didn’t.
I still think just repetition is good, and games where cards with the names of everyday objects on them, and a game played matching words to objects —
a little success goes such a long way.
It does not matter if the words are not in the set reading scheme ,to match “b e d” “ to a bed (picture on the back so no upset ) is really something and over time no picture will be needed .
It is fun and no stress ,it is a game!

“ Play is a child’s best endeavour “ our College Motto, they put the most effort into playing so learning through play is essential.

What a glorious day, the air is like champagne ,big towels etc dancing on the line ,snow melting and I might do a perambulation of the cemetery where the sun has shone on the path as the snow will have melted there too.

I know, all that washing ,but they have the storage for it ,well the ladies I knew did ,they thought I was mad doing it all at home every Monday.
Oh my twin tub Hoover ,you could rinse in the spin dryer with the hose.
And boil even I seem to remember.

Well two O’Clock and the shadows will be falling soon so teeth cleaned  ( or they would fall out —- three babies and Hyperemesis!) all togged up and my ice walking stick, all I need is a dog.
See you later , cheerio for now,Viktoria.
