Title: Joseph Socks.
Post by: wilcoxon on Friday 05 February 21 16:32 GMT (UK)
I have Joseph Socks birth registration on Ancestry and Freebmd. 1874  Dec quarter 1874.
6d 723. Oswestry
I can't find him on the GRO index.

I have a Joseph Sacks,  father Joseph,  mother Caroline in later census,   similer birth year born Oswestry.
I cant find a marriage for the parents so am trying to find MMN from GRO
Can anyone help please.
Joseph snr was born in Germany,.

FindMyPast has the baptism (Methodist) image giving Caroline's name as Caroline Keeler. :-\

Registration entry looks like 6a and not 6d; not sure if that helps though.

If Joseph senior was born in Germany it is possible his surname was Sachs.

I agree, but in the newspapers,  the census and both his and Carolines death they are Sacks.

There is a Keeler family in Oswestry,  but the names are transcribed badly in some records.
No Caroline found so far, she was born Oswestry c 1848
I'm not finding  any marriage for a Caroline Keeler at all.
This is a difficult one.

Thanks Nanny Jan, so far I've not found another child of Caroline and Joseph to check.

Hi,

You could order the birth certificate from the local BMD project group - Shropshire BMD (rather than the GRO). Their local records show mothers maiden name as Kehler and their reference being B-OSW-OSW/20/308

See Shropshirebmd/info for more details - cost of the certificate if required is £11.

1851, George and Elizabeth Keeley, both born Germany have daughter Caroline.
They are Keeler and Kehler in different records.

Thank, I think thats cracked it.

Hi,

There are several trees on Ancestry showing the family and they generally suggest George and Elizabeth had 6 children -

Caroline born Congleton, Cheshire
Margaret born Mold Flintshire
Elizabeth born Oswestry Shropshire
George also born Oswestry
Louisa - ditto
Alice - ditto

Concerning the father George, he seemed to move the family around -  In 1851 (shown as Keeley) an Ag Lab in Wrexham, Denbighshire; In Oswestry a Labourer in 1861 (shown as Keelan); Same in 1871 (shown as Kehler); In 1881 A scavenger (widower - shown as Kebler)

In the 1861 census "Caroline" is aged 12 and named as Catharine - all the family shown as born Oswestry.

Hope this helps

Alan

Hi,

Have just found an entry on FreeBMD  which I think could be Caroline's birth -

Mar Qtr 1849 Caroline Kaler - Congleton Vol 19 Page 91

Thanks,  I had spotted this family , and thought about Catherine being Caroline.
I'll take a look at the trees.
I have a "gut" feeling Joseph and are his family in Wrexham in 1881, but they are all born Wrexham and transcribed as Jacks. Not found later.

I have Carolines death in Wrexham, and.  her sons marriage,
