Title: Guernsey - Thomas BISHOP and Jane CURNOW
Post by: enzfan on Sunday 14 February 21 02:19 GMT (UK)
I am looking for the marriage and baptisms relating to this couple in Guernsey from 1851 through to 1860.

Thomas Bishop (wheelwright and widower) can be found living in St Martin, Guernsey in the 1851 census with his daughter, Caroline and two sons, Thomas and James. All are born in Somerset. Also in the residence is a Mary Ann Webb and her son, William.

According to someone else and not substantiated, Thomas married a Cornish girl, Jane Curnow on the 21st July, 1853 in St Andrews Church, St Peter Port. The couple then went on to have at least three children - Amelia Jane (1854 and on FamilySearch), William (1858, no record) and one other daughter (no record) and whose name I cannot find.

Thomas and his family, including his two sons, Thomas and James from an earlier marriage, then came to New Zealand in 1860.

I would vey much appreciate any help that anyone can give with regards to this couple and their children.

Regards
Robyn from New Zealand

Can you please outline your particular path back to Thomas on Guernsey?
I am a bit confused by what I am seeing in trees.

Presumably you have some information from NZ certificates.

Trees are saying these births are theirs from the NZ BDM
Are any of them your ancestor?  It’s a big gap from 1854 to 1863.

1869/36583   Bishop   Valdemar Alfred         Jane   Thomas
1863/19147   Bishop   Elizabeth                 Jane   Thomas
1866/31068   Bishop   Cecilia Avis         Jane   Thomas

Obit for Thomas Coats Bishop says it is just he and his brother James Coats  Bishop who came to NZ in 1860

Hi there

Definitely him in Guernsey in 1851. I have him living in Ilchester, Somerset in 1841 with his first wife, Susan COATE.

Yes three more children were born in NZ after their arrival.

Yes you are correct about the information on the obituary. And that was really confusing because the only BISHOP on the passenger list was Thomas, his wife, three sons and two daughters which complete threw me. Other people have Thomas Bishop senior dying in Somerset. But anyway...

I had my brother's DNA done and and found the connection to the second family. Few people have made this link. Unfortunately the Balclutha cemetery records were lost in a fire in 1911.

I've got all children but the missing daughter who came out on the Chili in 1860.

Thanks for confirming William's birth  :). Interesting that he wasn't born in Guernsey. I don't have any birth certificates for any of the other children

I have Jane's death printout - copy of original death entry - which gives maiden name and number and gender of children alive at time of death

What does it say about when and where she was married?
It is supposed to say where, and at what age. (Of course informant may not have known)

Hi Robyn
I have been researching Alice James Bishop who was born in Guernsey in about 1855 to Jane Curnow and Thomas Bishop. I have a printout of Alice's death record which gives her mother as Jane Bishop and birthplace as Guernsey. I also have Jane Bishop's death record which gives her mother's name as Mary Curnow and that Jane married a Thomas Bishop in Guernsey.
Alice James Bishop married Thomas Scott Poole in 1874 in Balclutha.

HI Susan

It doesn't look as if I ever replied to you. I am very sorry.

I've been poking around Rootschat looking at previous posts and replies and I found you. I'm in the process of trying to put my family story together in some sort of cohesive something-or-rather!

It came as quite a shock to discover that Thomas made it to NZ and is buried somewhere in Balclutha.  I made contact with a person connected to the genealogy club (I think) to try and find out more with regards to cemetery records as the original records were lost in a fire after Jane's death in 1911. Unfortunately she never got back to me.

You may know where Jane is buried and that may lead us to Thomas and their son Valdimer's plots. I have Thomas dying around 1877 based on Valdimer's death where it was stated that his father had died about 30 years earlier.

It was only a DNA test that found the connection to a second family for Thomas.

I live in Te Awamutu

Robyn

Hi Robyn
I know from Jane Bishop's death certificate that she is buried in the old Balclutha Cemetary. There is a headstone there with just the name Bishop on it so perhaps some of the family members are buried there.
I was grateful to learn more about Thomas Bishop and his first marriage which explained a few things i was uncertain about.

The Family Search website has a birth certificate for Emma Jane Bishop born 02 Jan 1854 to Thomas Bishop and Jane Currow in Saint Andrews, Guernsey, Channel Islands. I have found no other records for the family in Guernsey.

Thomas and Jane are my husband Mike's great great grandparents.
Mike and I are from Wellington but have lived in Tasmania for 35 years now.

Kind regards
Sue
