Title: Help with finding a Thomas Robert Fletcher
Post by: fletch001 on Monday 15 March 21 16:40 GMT (UK)
Hi All,
Trying to find information about a Thomas Robert Fletcher born on 6 June 1843 in Coventry. He also had a brother Robert Thomas Fletcher born around 1845.

The tricky part is that Thomas Robert Fletcher's middle name may not have been given to him at birth, possibly added later. Nothing about Robert Thomas Fletcher apart from his possible year of birth, 1845. Any help someone may be able to give would be greatly received, many thanks for your time.
Regards
Mike Fletcher

What information are you looking for and what information do you already have.

This would enable us to focus on what you are missing, rather than duplicating anything.

Hi Fay,
A little tricky this one, Thomas Robert Fletcher emigrated to the USA in 1860, aged 17, and died in 1908 in New York. His brother stayed in the UK. Trying to find his correct place of birth and his parent's names. I cannot find him or his brother in any census.
Hope this helps
Regards
Mike

"..Thomas Robert FLETCHER emigrated to the USA in 1860, aged 17, and died in 1908 in New York."

If you are looking for the origins of this man......how have you located and named a brother for him?

Where are you seeing Robert Thomas FLETCHER after his birth 1845, and how are you seeing a possible connection to your Thomas Robert FLETCHER?

What is your source for this information -
"..Thomas Robert Fletcher born on 6 June 1843 in Coventry"

Where has that information come from please?

Have you checked birth registrations for him and his brother in 1843/1845?

There's a Thomas born 1845 Coventry with parents Charles & Catherine.

And a Robert born 1843 with parents John & Mary who is still in England in 1861.

Have you got a passenger list for your person?  Is he on his own.

A family tree has his father George 1804-1881 mother Ann 1805-1872 and 6 children.

Does that help with finding him on census?

Not born Coventry but I think this is that family in 1851.

George Fletcher 45
Ann 46
William 26
James 15
John 12
Thomas 8 born Kingswarden Hertfordshire

Hi All,
Thank you for your replies, I am helping my relative in the USA, his Grandfather is Thomas Robert Fletcher, DoB is correct so is his arrival in the USA. His brother Robert Thomas Fletcher may have been his half-brother and his DoB is around 1844/45. When they were writing to each other they both used their middle names for some reason, never their first names.

The problem is we cannot find them in any of the census/documentation in the UK and confirm this. We have found the 1851 census with Thomas Fletcher with his father George & Ann Almond but cannot confirm it is him, and George & Ann never had a son called Robert as far as we can tell.
Hope this helps and thanks again for any help you can give.

Would need double checking but I think the Thomas son of George & Ann is married and still in Hertfordshire on later census.

Hi All,
Sorry for the delay in my reply just back in from work. I had to email USA this morning asking for some more info. They are not certain he was born in Coventry and not certain if he arrived in the USA by himself or with his family.

Would it be better if I transferred this to general England instead of county site?

It would appear Thomas was married twice in the USA. Would your family (in the US) have copies of the marriage certificates or would they be able to obtain copies.

Or can they access marriage registers/records  that we don’t have access to as I think they would name his parents.

Mike

Just to add Thomas's first marriage was a Catholic ceremony - the 2nd one I am unsure about at the moment,  but will do some more research this afternoon when I have more time.

Hi Fay,
Just back from work and had a reply from the USA. They have checked the marriage certs they have and there are no names of Thomas R Fletcher's parents on it.
However, his first wife was Ellen Powers born in 1852 in Watertown, New York, and married on 06/06/1869.

Thomas R Fletcher's second wife was Mary Wylde born 18/07/1850 in Watertown, New York, and died 24 May 1940. They both married in 1883.

Still does not solve the problem of finding Thomas R and his brother Robert T Fletcher and their parent's names and whereabouts they came from in the UK.

Regards
Mike

Mike

Thats the information I had come up with - 2nd marriage to Mary Wylde was her 2nd marriage as well.

The reason i asked about marriage certificates is that an ancestor of mine left England for the US and got married there in 1911 and his parents names are listed in the register.

If we had the parents names it may have made it easier to search the UK births and census.

Hi Fay,
Just had a look at a copy of Thomas R Fletcher's memorial notice, he died 05/01/1908 aged 60yrs. That makes his DoB around 1848 not 1843 as stated.
Hope this helps

Do the family still have his death certificate - this may also show his parentage.

Hi Fay,
The plot thickens, According to the US Watertown, Jefferson New York 1870 census, he was named Thomas F Fletcher aged 25 birthplace Ireland. In the 1875 census, he was named Thomas Fletcher aged 30 born in England. Both censuses were with his first wife Ellen Powers.

In the 1900 census, he was named Thomas Fletcher, DoB 1843, date moved to USA 1860 and birthplace for him, Mother & Father was England. He was living with his second wife Mary on this census.

At present, there are no death certs. Hope this helps.

Mike

When they were writing to each other they both used their middle names for some reason, never their first names.

I assume this means some letters still exist? If so, is there an address on them?
Or place names /peoples names mentioned?

Hi Mckha489,
There is no address on the letters I have seen, they are only transcripts I have been sent from the US.

Mike

I also saw the 1870 Census (where it shows birthplace as Ireland) and subsequent Census showing birthplace as England.  I actually came across the same thing with my ancestor that left England for the US.

We don't deem to have any definitive information for date of birth or parents - and without those details it is going to be very difficult to find the information you are looking for.

His date of birth does differ on what you already know - and as for the date of birth on his death certificate this may have been given by his family when registering the death and may have been what they believed it to be - as opposed to what it actually was.

I think I would actually start a post on Roots Chat USA board (if you or your family haven't already done so) - telling them as much as you know and what you don't know.

They may be able to suggest where to look, what can be viewed online, what can be ordered to confirm date of birth, parentage etc etc.
