If anyone has access to the register of electors for the village of Box I'd be very grateful for a lookup for Alfred Merle DUVAL.
His daughter was born on 13th Aug 1910 and baptised in the Box parish church on 2nd Oct 1910. Alfred was recorded as a manservant on the baptismal record.
In 1901 he was in Tonbridge, Kent and in 1911 he was again in Tonbridge where he's recorded as married but there is no record of a marriage that I can find.
I'd be very interested to discover where he was living between those dates.

What was the mothers name on the birth cert?
Alfred M DUVAL
Surname on 1911 is Duvall and he is 28
Births March qtr 1883
Duvall Alfred Murrell Tunbridge 2a 702

In 1911 the child is living with him and his parents and there appears to be a wife as well
Was mother Evelyn Steptoe on birth cert?

Haven't got the birth certificate, it's just Alfred Merle & Evelyn Ruby, surname Duval, on the baptism record. In fact her name at birth was SEATON, she was adopted by the Steptoe family and took their surname.
-
Was the child born 1910 named Joan Agnes Laura Duval - married Benjamin Smith 1931
If yes - her mmn was Steptoe and in 1911 Evelyn Duvall is shown as married as is Alfred so it would be reasonable to assume it was to each other
There is no marriage under Duval/Duvall or under Steptoe pre 1911
Evelyn’s birth was registered as Eveline Seaton - Ruby must have been added later
-
Yes, Evelyn and Alfred certainly said they were married, there's even a photo stated to have been taken on their wedding day, no record though. We suspect that when Alfred and Evelyn returned, with a baby, to Alfred's parents in Tonbridge they just decided to tell everyone that they were married.
Another family member thinks they have Joan Agnes Laura's birth certificate, I've asked about the mother's surname.
Anyway, I'd still like to track Alfred down between 1901 and 1910, I think the electoral registers will be the only way to do this.

Electoral Registers are listed by address, except for a few areas where they have been indexed.
So, you need a street name and house number.

Yes I know, but Box is a pretty small village so it wouldn't take too long to search the registers manually.
Just hoping someone might have access to them, if not I'll visit the County Record Office when we can travel freely again.

What do you hope to gain by searching ER's for that one year?

The birth address could be more significant. GRO online confirms mmn was Steptoe
2 more Duval/Steptoe births 1918 & 1921 in Abingdon Berks. The 1918 birth - Paula Patricia - died shortly after birth
Alfred died Oxfordshire 1939 and Eveline is incorrectly transcribed as Dural on the 1939 register. Daughter Patricial Valda b 1921 married 1940 Oxfordshire

Well I'd quite like to check the years from 1901 to 1910, just curious to know where he was living in that time.

Yes, I've got all that. I agree that the birth address would be very useful, just waiting to hear if the birth certificate has turned up.

Have the birth certificate for Joan Agnes Laura Duval now.
Birth address was in Trowbridge and a search turns up that it was at the home of a registered midwife.
The mother's surname was recorded as Duval and the address is given as 3 New Cottages, Box. I haven't been able to trace where this is, it's not found on a FindMyPast address search of the 1911 census.

Thanks for this - I've now found Middle Hill in the 1911 as well, sadly no 'New Cottages' to be found.

The electoral registers are on F M P

Thanks very much for checking for me - sadly not the info I was hoping for! Alfred is turning out to be quite elusive!
Interestingly his occupation is recorded as Hotel Assistant Manager on their daughter's birth certificate but Manservant on the baptism record.

I'll need to search more diligently as I hadn't found them.

They come under this category

I do think F M P is quite difficult to search, however I can't find Alfred Duval until he appears in Steventon, Berkshire in 1920.
I don't know how complete the electoral registers are - a search for another ancestor in Rugby that I know is on the roll in the 1890s doesn't find him.

It is possible that he was not eligible to vote -
http://www.rootschat.com/links/01qgj/
Representation of the People Act 1918
In 1918 the Representation of the People Act was passed which allowed women over the age of 30 who met a property qualification to vote.
The same Act abolished property and other restrictions for men, and extended the vote to virtually all men over the age of 21. Additionally, men in the armed forces could vote from the age of 19. The electorate increased from eight to 21 million, but there was still huge inequality between women and men.

That's a possibility, the eligibility criteria seem quite complex prior to 1918.
