Title: STACKHOUSE
Post by: Eyesee on Friday 07 May 21 03:33 BST (UK)
Alfred STACKHOUSE married Charlotte Ann ECKSTEIN in 1900, not sure where. They had one known daughter Elsie Eileen born Oct 1903. She married Douglas Lyford McNAE in 1925. They are all buried in the Kimbolton Cemetery.

Can't find a birth reg for the daughter anywhere. Her DOB comes from her death reg.

Believe Charlotte Ann was married before to Fred ECKSTEIN and that her maiden name was actually JOHNSON. Has anyone come across this lady anywhere.

Thanks.

seems she couldn't be found in 1938 either!

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/ODT19380818.2.2.5?items_per_page=10&query=Charlotte+ann+eckstein&snippet=true

so why not searching for STACKHOUSE?

As Charlotte Ann STACKHOUSE is in electoral rolls all along, perhaps Fred Eckstein was married to a different Charlotte Ann. confusing

Modified to add.  1938 was the year Fred Eckstein died. Intestate, so Public Trust looking for Charlotte. Did they divorce or did she marry bigamously?

1889 was the year of that marriage.  I wonder if it had anything to do with the below.

Naturalisation Records

Name :ECKSTEIN Frederick
Date : 30 Nov 1899
Place : Pahiatua
Occupation : Labourer
Source : NZ Gazette 1899
Page : 2224
Record Type : Naturalisation

Alien Records - 1917

Name : ECKSTEIN Fredrick
Date : 1917
Age : 54
Birth Country : France
Years in NZ : 33
Place : Ohura
Page : 109

Probably clutching at straws, but I have a similar one in one of my trees, no divorce or anything, we think it was so the spouse could stay in the country.  Bride remarried shortly after the first.

It could be possible that the first marriage was annulled?

Thanks everyone.

It appears Fred and Charlotte Ann had a daughter also called Charlotte in 1890, but she only lived for 10hrs.

Wonder where Overingham is in England. Will look it up.

Hi Ian

"Overingham" is very possibly Hoveringham, Nottinghamshire ??

This family, (a possibility),  arrived as Assisted Immigrants to Taranaki - per "Hurunui" - departed UK, 24 November 1875, arrived NZ  23 February 1876.

JOHNSON
- Henry - 27 years - farm Labourer - ex Notts.
- Sarah A. -  24
- Mary S ? (-looks like) - 5 years
- Charlotte A. - 3 years - [ bc 1872 ]

UK Marriage

Henry JOHNSON
Sarah Ann TINDALL ... Married - Notts.  - 15 May 1870 - Registered : Southwell

                                                                               ... see next  >>

Minniehaha.

Despite what the headstone reads, the Cemetery record and the NZ BDM (online) entry both show that Charlotte STACKHOUSE died in 1960 aged 89 years ... born c. 1871 .

This birth  >

1871 - 3rd quarter
JOHNSON - Charlotte Ann
Reg'd at Southwell, Notts.

On an entry at FindMyPast, the mother of this child is shown as,  Surname = TINDALL (see previous post for marriage 1870 - JOHNSON-TINDALL).

Death notice - 1930 -  for Sarah Ann JOHNSON >

https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/MT19300610.2.2

... widow of late Henry JOHNSON, late of Feilding.

[This Sarah Ann JOHNSON has same year of birth as the lady who arrived NZ February 1876 with a daughter named Charlotte A. JOHNSON. ]

1896 - Taranaki - Patea, roll

JOHNSON - Henry - labourer
JOHNSON - Sarah Ann     ... both at Otamoa

Post by: Lucy2 on Friday 07 May 21 15:59 BST (UK)
1928 - Manawatu - Palmerston

JOHNSON - Sarah Ann - Old People's Home  - widow

1911 - Manawatu

Sarah Ann JOHNSON - at Apiti   - Married   (there's also a John JOHNSON, settler at Apiti - can't tell if he's related to this Sarah Ann ) ... and at a separate address  >  Henry JOHNSON - drover at Feilding  ??

These JOHNSON's seem to be in right place (location-wise) to have possibly been the family of Charlotte Ann.
Have yet to find Henry's burial.

^   Burial here for "Harry JOHNSTON" - 24/03/1914 which seems to be the father - though age given as 72 years (not the 64 years reported in newspaper article ?)

[   ODD ?   - NZ Death Index has two persons named "Henry JOHNSON - both died 1st Quarter 1914 ... one died 27 January aged 72 years - registered Auckland.   The other, died on 19/03/1914, at 64 years of age - and appears to be the death with the Feilding registration  ? ]

Thanks very much everyone. Answers all the questions except one.

Wonder what happened to Mary Susan in NZ. Found them in 1871 in Newark upon Trent and she was 7mths old, so 5 on the ship would be about right.

They had one known daughter Elsie Eileen born Oct 1903.

Can't find a birth reg for the daughter anywhere. Her DOB comes from her death reg.

Do you have a day for Elsie's birth?  If she were my ancestor I would want to find proof of her birth or baptism.  One child to Charlotte and Frederick in however long they were together, then Charlotte does not have another child until 13 years later, 3 years after her second marriage.

There is a registered birth for an Elsie Eileen COLEMAN, illegitimate daughter of Edith born 1 Oct 1903.

Hi Debra ... I checked this COLEMAN birth also ... and ruled it out for some reason.   Will go back and look again.     I think the birth was registered at Napier.

Hi   ... I will come back to this ... just need to further clarify some issues.   ;D

I'm guessing Debra, that you thought much the same as me, that the child Elsie Eileen COLEMAN may have been adopted out  ??   ;)

AND Correction to my earlier post ... this 1903 birth, was actually registered at Wellington NZ.

I think it is possible given the fact that there is no birth registration under STACKHOUSE and Charlotte does not have much of a childbirth history.  If Elsie's known date and place of birth is also 1 Oct 1903 at Wellington then it seems highly likely.
