I don't have a subscription to findmypast, but on their index I can see a marriage (or banns) for a Sophia DYER at All Saints, Loughborough in 1836. I can't find this on Ancestry, FreeReg or familysearch. Would it please be possible for someone to look at the record and let me know what it says?
Many thanks in advance.

Banns, 25 dec 1836, 1 Jan 1837 and 8 Jan 1837
Between Sophia Dyer (spinster) and William Dennis (bachelor)
Both of the parish.
-
That's great, thanks mckha! :D
I don't suppose you can see if there is an actual marriage?
Actually I have just been reading some newspaper accounts of a Sophia DYER and 2 DENNIS brothers in trouble with the law at Loughborough, but in 1845. Will look it up again and check who they were.
-
There doesn’t seem to be a marriage. Well, not an obvious one anyway. Unfortunately it’s not one of those Banns registers where they have made a note,
-
No worries, thanks for looking.
Have checked the papers again, and she was in trouble with Samuel and John DENNIS, not William, and in 1845, so if it is the same girl sounds like they didn't marry.
In any case, not sure if it's "my" Sophia, who was baptised 1813 at Stathern but seems to disappear after that. :-\
-
What there is is a 4 Nov 1865 marriage at Loughborough of
William Dennis, 51, framework knitter of Conery Passage. Father a framework knitter. John Dennis
And Sophia Nelson widow 53 of North Street, father Robert Dyer, a musician
-
Previous marriage was to George Newton Nelson in Hull. 9 Jan 1860
Same father though
Sophia DYEAR is 48. And a spinster.
-
Oh that sounds very possible, her father was Robert and whilst I haven't been able to discover his occupation, 3 of his sons were all musicians. :D
And I just found what looks like them in 1871 at Loughborough, though it has her age as 10 years too young.
RC10/3255 pg31

1851
William Dennes framework knitter 37
Sophia Dennes 39
George Dennes 5
All b Loughborough
Wellington Street, Loughborough
-
Yes, I just found that , and checked George's mother's maiden name - DYER.
So now, I have 2 Sophia DYERs marrying 2 William DENNISs? Or is it the same couple, but who then marries in 1860 and 1865?
Modified to add: the Sophia I'm looking for definitely has father Robert and was bap 1813 at Stathern.
Modified again:
Actually looking more carefully, the George born at Loughborough with mmn DYER was in 1843, so a bit older than George in the 1851 census.
It's getting past my bedtime, so I'm going to come back to this fresh tomorrow. :)
-
The signature for Sophia on the two marriages looks very similar.
Occupation of William 1851 matches marriage.
I lean towards thinking it is the same couple, who must have had a very turbulent relationship
-
I've got this family in my tree. According to the Stathern church records, her father Robert was a dancing master!
-
Thanks again mckha :)
Annie, that's great, I know Robert's 3 sons Thomas, Reuben and Benjamin were all dancing masters and musicians/teachers at different times so suspected Robert was most likely in a similar profession. As I mentioned earlier, I don't have a sub to findmypast where I think the parish records for Stathern are digitised and have been contemplating whether to fork out some more money. It's a long story, but this is not the family of a blood relation of mine, though of someone who thought of me as a daughter. I have finally gotten around to researching her history, she's related through Robert's son Benjamin.
I'd love to have your opinion of these findings about Sophia. So it seems she was baptised at Stathern in 1813, parents Robert DYER and his 2nd wife Mary PALIN.
She was planning to marry William DENNIS in Loughborough in 1836 where they called the banns, though I don't think they married then.
There are reports in the papers of a Sophia DYER in trouble for not completing some lace in 1835, and then with Samuel and John DENNIS for assaut (and later not paying the fine) in 1845 at Loughborough.
Not sure about the 1841, there is a William (fwk) and Sophia DENNIS of about the right age in St Peter, Nottingham with a child John, 5.
They appear to be together as "married" in 1851 at Hollington St, Loughborough with a child George,5, (not sure what happens to him?)
In 1860 Sophia marries George Newton NELSON at Hull and they are together in the 1861 at Hull. George dies in 1862, and Sophia then marries William DENNIS back in Loughborough in 1865.
William and Sophia are together in 1871 in Conery Passage (where William was living on their marriage cert), though their ages are out by 10 years.
Sophia dies before 1881 when William is widowed in the Loughborough workhouse. Possibly her death in Basford in Mar qtr 1878? William dies in November 1882 at Loughborough.
How does this tally with your own research? Love to hear from you, thanks, M.

Morning,
It's not my blood line either, and I haven't followed its members in detail. Sophia's father Robert was the brother of my 4th gt-grandfather. I've got his two marriages, and a total of 14 children -- 8 with his first wife Sarah Bissell, and 6 (including Sophia) by his second, Mary Palin.
I've got gravestone photos of some of the family, and also a photo of a piece of graffiti in the church at Stathern which I think was probably done by Sophia's brother Benjamin.
The only thing I can add to the research that you've listed, is details of the 1878 burial. A 64 year old Sophia Dennis from Carlton, Notts, was buried in the graveyard of All Hallows at Gedling, Notts, on 17 Feb 1878.

I don't have the info about Sophia's brothers (actually 1/2 brothers) also being dancing teachers or musicians, btw, where did you find that? I know that Benjamin emigrated to Australia. I have Reuben as a brewer and wine merchant in the censuses. I don't have any info for Thomas other than his baptism. Two other (full) brothers, Robert and Samuel, were ag labs.
-
I've tried to track down all the siblings.
Thomas married Sophia BREWSTER in 1811 at Grantham. They are in the 1841 at Grantham (HO107/624/4 pg17) where he is a "dancing master". He died in 1850 at Little Gonerby, there are newspaper ads to do with his estate where he is described a "professor of dancing".
Reuben married Ann Hill COLLEY in 1834 at Hove, Sussex. They are in the 1841 at Boston, Lincs (HO107/613/2 pg 21) - he is a "dancing master". In later censuses he is a brewer and wine merchant.
There are numerous newspaper advertisments for the dancing schools of the DYER brothers, both together and seperate, over the years - from memory one even says they learnt the latest styles recently from Paris.
As you say, Benjamin went to Australia, travelling with Rev WITTERNOOM (who became quite influential in Western Australia) as tutor to the Rev's sons. He left Perth (WA) going to Sydney where he appeard as violinist in the orchestra at the Theatre Royale, married (or not, haven't found evidnece yet) Ann SMITH nee REAY and then went to Tasmania where he opened a dancing school and gave music lessons. Newspaper ads at the time give his references as teaching dancing with his brothers in England. He died in 1875.
I still find it strange that Robert's children from his first marriage seem to do very well for themselves while those from his second marriage are ag labs - not that there's anything wrong with that! but I would have thought a different class. :-\
I haven't heard about the graffiti - would love to see it if you could send me a link or copy. :)
-
The only other child of Robert I still haven't traced is Sarah bap 7 Feb 1809. Do you know what happened to her?

Have just realised I posted this thread on the Resources and Offers Board by mistake. I've tried to "report to moderator" to move it, but seem to be having trouble doing so. Anyway, if a mod happens to read this could they please move the thread? Thanks
-
Pm me your email address and I'll send the photos.

Thanks so much Annie, will do. :)
