I have a DNA match (one segment of 69cM) who is a Parfitt with connections to Clutton, I have Parfitt(s) in my family tree from Stoke Lane but I can’t for the life of me workout where my DNA match fits in. I wonder if anyone knows of any links between the two Parfitt family lines.
Many thanks

Clutton, Somerset 8 miles North of Stoke Lane
Parfitt records on freereg, there are more with soundex on.
More than 500 results Clutton: St Augustine of Hippo: Parish Register
First baptism 1701 first marriage 1709, first burial 1704
Last baptism 1921 last marriage 1897, last burial 1913
205 results = Stoke Lane: St Michael: Parish Register
First baptism 1730 first marriage 1765, first burial 1711
Last baptism 1901 last marriage 1826, last burial 1900
I would imagine there would be some movement between the two places..
If you give some idea of names and dates it might be possible for someone to make the link.

Hi Colin
Thank you so much for all your hard work! What you have matches what I have managed to find but I think it took me much longer!!
I even tried to follow up on Bertram's wife who I think was Ann Hale 1857 but the earliest record I I could find was the an 1871 census that had her age 14 living in Aberystruth with a George and Ann Hale and she was listed as George's niece.
Best wishes

Hi Mike,
Looking at your own line is this your John 1781 on your list, if so I wonder if you know who the father of John was and does this have any effect on the DNA Match?

Hi Colin
Once again a big "thank you"!
I have the same John Parfitt as you but I struggle that far back to be sure that I have the correct person. Thus far I have not been able to sort out who his father was. The others in my list match the people you have found.
The Sarah Parfit you have could well be John's mother.
Best wishes

Hi Mike
As far as I can see your own line seems to be correct.
The one thing I cannot work out is Grace Parfitt, you mention her father was Oliver Parfitt born Clutton 1887. Which appears to be correct.
PARFITT, OLIVER mmn HALE
GRO Reference: 1887 J Quarter in CLUTTON Volume 05C Page 580
Oliver Parfitt married Hannah Sheppard Q3/1895 Bath
1911 - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X7R6-R5R
However I cannot find a birth record for Grace to match that, do you know when and where born?
The reason I ask is there was more than one Oliver born around that time including the one below.
Oliver PARFITT Baptism 1882 Somerset Stoke Lane : St Michael : Parish Register
Parents William Henry a Labourer & Mary Jane – Notes [between 20 Aug and 17 Dec 1882]
1911 - https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X7RX-JZM
He may have married in Clutton in 1913 (Woodland) or 1916 (Jukes)

Hi Colin
My apologies I've just looked again and Grace's father Oliver Parfitt was born in Welton in 1887. He married an Ethel Jukes (registration district Clutton) in 1916.
Best wishes

Are well that blew my most likely theory, back to the drawing board.
Oliver 1911 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X7RV-74J
Ethel Jukes 1911 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X7RV-W3S
Most likely Ethel 1901 https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XS8V-9NN
I note the marriage and the large family they had.
Parfitt Oliver 58 Norton 5c 505 Died Q2/1945
PARFITT ETHEL M 75 NORTON 7C 545 Died Q1/1968
Colin
PS if Grace is still living you need to delete the reference to her.
-
It's a bit of a conundrum! I am fairly new to genealogy and RootsChat - please could you just tell me how I delete the reference to Grace.
Many thanks
Mike

Hi Mike,
If you go into your post, top right hand corner of that post click modify, delete name and year of Grace.
Click save - done.
Good luck Colin
PS I'm working on a new theory..........to be continued!
-
Thank you Colin - I've done the deletion! If you do have any other ideas I would love to hear them and if I get an answer I will be sure to tell you!
Best wishes

I cannot find a clear answer yet, I was thinking it might have been earlier but with the birth of John in 1781 your male line will have broken the DNA unless the father was a Parfitt.
There are marriages on freereg but they do not show place of birth only if it has been recorded the parish they resided in at the time of the marriage. As soon as you get beyond statutory registration in 1837 marriage records on freereg are few and far between, census records may turn up a few people that moved between the two places.
Sadly my membership has expired on Ancestry & Find my past.

Hi Mike,
I'm sorry to say I cannot find any obvious connection, through the paternal line, linking the two places.

Hi Colin
I really appreciate your time and trouble. Perhaps a link will become evident with more DNA matches; I will let you know if the mystery gets solved!
Best wishes

Hi Mike,
I’m sorry I could not find a clear answer. I did find a few things, which you may already have but just in case you do not.
Brothers of William 1804, sons of John 1781.
George born 1807 = No clear marriage or death.
Possible burial but age 16, however no other births there around that time other than James 1812.
James PARFITT Burial 07 Jan 1830 Somerset Stoke Lane : St Michael : Parish Register
Joseph PARFITT Burial age 3 mth 2 Jul 1815 Somerset Stoke Lane : St Michael : Parish Register
Plus the two I posted earlier.
Joseph Parfit 1803 Burial 16 Nov 1814 age 11,
Thomas 1809 Burial 16 Nov 1814 age 5
Male children of William, excluding George.
Benjamin 1837 = no clear trace after 1851
Elisha married Eliza Brown 1864.
Eliza PARFITT Burial age 24 15 Feb 1869 Somerset Stoke Lane : St Michael : Parish Register
1871 – 1891 = Elisha 41 Ag Lab – widower on his own Stoke Village
1861 Joseph 23 is a Lodger in Shepton Mallet he is a Maltser at Oakhill Brewery
1871 Back in Stoke Lane age 36 an Ag Lab, with his mother Martha 66 a widow, also his nephew
William age 5 born Stoke Lane (Son of Elisha)
1871 William PARFITT 27 Brewers Labourer, wife Arabella 18, Hannah J 1
Abode Top Of Stoke Hill, all born Stoke Lane
Regarding your DNA match to Grace Parfitt which you have traced her back as follows:
Oliver Parfitt (father) Birth Clutton 1887
Bertram Parfitt Birth 1856 Welton
James Parfitt Birth 1811 Radstock
George Parfitt Birth 1783 Clutton
The above line is a little more difficult for although the parish record for George 1783 is Clutton, his son James 1811 is one of the first at Radstock Parish 5 miles away, this maybe to do with the mines https://radstockmuseum.co.uk - Then his son Bertram 1856 is born Welton (Midsomer Norton) but Registered Clutton as was his son Oliver in 1887.
Registration districts for Somerset from 1837 https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/reg/som.html
So I’m not so sure if it is a straightforward question linking Stoke Lane & Clutton.
Regards Colin

Hi Colin
Thank you for detailing what you had tried; I had done something similar with no success. I have another person who matches with me and with Grace with a large segment that we all triangulate with. I have managed to link her to my tree and I was hopeful that this might help me
find the link but no luck. I have put my DNA on My Heritage and there are a lot matches that Grace and I share so I will have a deeper look at some of these and see if they help - failing that I may have to "put it to bed" for the time being and direct my energy to a different part of my tree!
Best wishes
Mike
