Hello All,
I have begun research on one of my grandmothers named Betty Downes (Born about 1833 in Bosden Stockport and Married to Thomas Smith 1851 Stockport). I believe that her parents were named James Downes and Ellen Booth, but I am not entirely sure. Would anyone be able to help me learn more about Ellen Booth if she is the Mother? Thanks for taking the time to read, and any guidance Or direction is appreciated! - FJ

did she wed before or after 1851 census?
Do you believe this to be her? (1851)

Marriage was Dec qtr 1851 so after the 1851 census
-
Have you seen the marriage certificate?
I cannot find any Betty/Elizabeth Downes born c.1833 to James & Ellen in Bosden but Pauline's census looks like a definite possible for Betty in 1851.

Thankyou for the Replies All! I do believe that to be Betty in the 1851 census, but only because when I had searched for her on 1851 on FindMyPast, that was the only census record to come up. The only reason why I had thought James Downes and Ellen Booth were the parents is because I have a record of them getting married in Cheadle, Cheshire (27 FEB 1831 FHL FILM NUMBER 1655428) and Betty was born two years later, but there could be other parent options which I missed? -FJ

There a at least 2 other Betty Downes b Cheshire in roughly the same timescale. The 1861 census shows her birthplace as Bosden so Pauline's 1851 entry does seem the most likely
However - it were me - I would invest in a copy of the 1851 marriage cert. The marriage was at St Mary Cheadle

Thankyou Carole! I also forgot to add that the first known child of Thomas Smith and Betty Downes which I found was named Ann Downes born 1852 Norbury Moor near Bosden. -FJ

Ah yes! I searched On that Link just now Carole - it gave a large amount of information, Betty was 19 and her father was James Downes, a collier, and James' occupation in the 1851 census was a coal miner, do you think this is all adding up to be the correct family?

Yes I do
