Title: Scottish burials

Please excuse my ignorance but are wives buried under their maiden names?

I'm looking for the burials of the THOMSON family from Dunfermline and have found a transcription for Janet Sommerville (who married Robert Thomson in 1782)

Inscription            Janet Sommerville ... (Cathn) (Thomson) ... their son ... 1790 ...
Cemetery             Dunfermline Abbey Churchyard.

I found a website for this graveyard but can only access the Introduction page. Can anyone find out if there is a clearer inscription please.

Possibly the stone is weathered or damaged and what you have is all that's clear.

A woman in Scotland never "loses" her maiden name and is always called by it in records, especially older ones. If Jean Smith marries John Brown she is still referred to, in legal documents, as Jean Smith or Brown.

Hi Jenny

I'll be in Dunfermline at the start of next week and am planning to visit the Abbey.  If I get there, I'll have a look, although as GR2 has said, the stone may be weathered or damaged.
