Hello All
Is it possible to find a marriage certificate for a Norman Mcdonald to a Barbara Mcdonald in 1891 in Dufferin, Manitoba please?
I'd like to find their fathers names please? and anything else on the certificate. Then I may be able to find her birth in Scotland.
Many thanks

What else do you know about Barbara ? Or Norman ?
Sandra
-
1911 and 1916 census records indicate Barbara emigrated to Canada in 1889. Both census records list her birth year as 1867.
If it helps, the 1901 Canada census lists a DoB of 6 Dec 1868 for Barbara (born Scotland).
Norman's DoB is 10 Jan 1861 (born Ontario).
His parents could be Allen & Isabella McDonald (nee Mckilligan / Mackillican). Father born in Nova Scotia, mother born in Scotland.
Possible birth?
Name: Isabella Mackillican
Birth Date: 05 Apr 1826
Baptism Date: 15 Apr 1826
Baptism Place: Cawdor, Nairn, Scotland
Father: John Mackillican
Mother: Margt. Macarthur
Is this her in the 1851 census?
Name: Isabella Mckilligan
Age Next Birthday: 26
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1825
Birthplace: Scotland
Residence Place: Glengarry, Canada West (Ontario), Canada
Profession, Trade, or Occupation: Ditto [labourer]
Religion: Congregalnalist
-
Looks like Barbara in the 1891 Canada census:
Name: Barbara Mcdonald
Marital Status: Single
Age: 23
Birth Year: abt 1868
Birth Place: Scotland
Residence Place: Dufferin North, Selkirk, Manitoba, Canada
Religion: Free Church
Occupation: Cook
Can Read: Yes
Can Write: Yes
Father's Birth Place: Scotland
Mother's Birth Place: Scotland

Nothing on passenger lists so far for a Barbara McDonald
Son John McDonald died in British Columbia 3 March 1975 but death certificate didn't help with Barbara's maiden name, unless OK means something.

Perhaps it was an acknowledgment that Barbara's maiden name was also Mcdonald.

Now that you have Barbara's DoB (6 Dec), check Scotland's People website to see if you can find a birth record for her in 1867 or 1868. To view images and confirm DoB, you will need to purchase credits. https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
Searching the year range of 1867-1868 returned 12 results for her name. To view one image costs 6 credits. So in theory, you'll need to purchase 80 credits (£20.00). However, if she is amongst those 12 results, you will have her father's name, his occupation, and mother's maiden name. Good information for taking the family further back.
If you want to save a few credits, compare the 12 SP records to Scottish birth/baptisms on Ancestry. Example: You can disregard the Barbara Mcdonald birth in Bridgeton, Glasgow, due to her 8 Jul 1868 DoB given on Ancestry. Same for the BM born 1867 in Old Monkland (her DoB is 18 January). And so on...
Hopefully the 6 December DoB she gave on the 1901 census is correct. :-\

Hi everyone
Thank you for all the information you have all given me. :)
Kind regards

No problem, sorry we haven't got anything positive for you. Have you any other small clues you could give us ?

Someone may correct me but I don't think parents would be indicated in the detail view of a Manitoba marriage record. I believe one would need to order the cert to see these details.
There is no guarantee that Norman and Barbara's parents would be on their 1891 marriage cert but you might consider purchasing it in case they are.

If this was Barbara McDonald - the birth date on the 1900 census would be incorrect (not unusual)
Barbara McDonald - 12 August 1864 - 27 December 1939 (Crawford Park Manitoba)
Age at Death 75
Death Place Sw3 20 20, Manitoba, Canada.
https://vitalstats.gov.mb.ca/Query.php
Mrs. Norman MC DONALD, 75, died at the home of her son Allan, Crawford Park, Dec. 27.
Mrs. MC Donald was born in Scotland. Fifty years ago she and her husband came to Canada to the Shoal Lake district. Following 18 years in the hotel business at Elphinstone, they moved to Crawford Park about 11 years ago. Surviving are her husband, two sons, Jack, Stony Mountain - Allan, Crawford Park, and three daughters, Mrs. E. W. Spragg, Menzie; Mrs. B Leary Winnipeg and Mrs. H. McKercher, Strathclair. Manitoba.

Not surprised it's a different DoB. ::) Yesterday I couldn't locate a Barbara Mcdonald on SP or Ancestry using the 6th December date. Maybe she's there with a 12 August 1864 DoB.
Makes sense they were in the hotel trade. Barbara was a cook in a hotel in the 1891 census. I think the hotel proprietor was named Campbell.

Hi Sandra
Thank you. I have a couple of different birth dates for her too:)
When I click into the Manitoba site, what do I go into to get to the information please?
The Obit is her as she had a son Allan and also a daughter that married a Spraggs, so thank you for finding that. Norman may have died in 1975? He must have gone to Scotland as he was born in Ontario.
Many thanks
Kind regards
-
I don't think Norman died in 1975 - he would have been 114 years old :) :) Nice thought. :) :)

Hi everyone
I've been trying, without success to look for Obits but I'm not sure where to look.
Is it possible someone can find an Obit for an Ila Christine Mcdonald, all I know is she was born on 25 August 1922 in Sashwasken and married John Arthur Mcdonald before 1944 (when he died.)
John Arthur Mcdonald died in France on 14.8.1944 so I'm not sure if he would have had an Obit?
Also looking for Obits on Edward James Spraggs and his wife Katherine Ann (nee Mcdonald). All I know is Katherine was born 25.11.1895.
They were married on 12 August 1914 Manitoba.
Many thanks for any help
